Not sure if anyone covered this yet but perhaps there was 1,009,000 miles put on it since the last reported mileage and the odo has just gone around again. :notsure:

Me too (curious). Seems there's a lot of conflicting info on the interwebz. Any way you can ask a Toyota dealer directly?

gentlemen at local dealership said there is no way to know true mileage of truck if odometer unit was swapped, i.e. mileage is not stored anywhere but odometer unit, but at this point idk what to believe. dealership guy was super rushed and sorta seemed like he just wanted me to go away. maybe I'll try a different dealership when it's not so busy.

The only mileage is in the odometer .

At this point who can really say how much mileage your truck has .

Was it criminal intent or did the original cluster just fail and was replaced.

Since I know nothing about this carfax just how do they get this information ??

Do the different garages down load on a constant basis every little job they do ??

The dealers Computers are open for them to just extract every little item ??

I need to see if my valves cores have been changed lately.

    Such is life

This happened to me when I purchased my daughter's first car. The seller had a Carfax so I took his word for the milage that was on the Carfax as it was what the car showed. I purchased the car and brought it home. The next morning I ran my own Carfax and it was totally different than the the Carfax that the guy gave me. Same vin # but the milage was way off by 100k. I ran another mileage check on another sight and it matched the Carfax that I ran. The shit that I bought it from altered the Carfax to match the odometer that he had replaced in the car. I called him up and told him that he can have his car back either in his drive way or his living room the choice was his but either way I was going to get my money back. He gave me my money back and paid for the notary and the title transfer.
Sucks that this happened to you but if you like the truck say fuck it and move on. Make truck yours and enjoy it.

Only read the first couple of posts..

We had a customer take their vehicle in for service at the dealership. Dealership wrote down the wrong mileage and was recorded into their system. The dealership reports to CarFax and to DMV smog records. We had to go get the vehicle inspected to show the actual mileage on the odometer and send it off to the state to get the mileage corrected on the internal records.

Mistakes can happen at the smog shops as well. They misread the odometer or its only a xx,xxx odometer you dont always get the most accurate readings because a lot of times the smog shops will guess when its over 99,999 to say its 1xx,xxx or 2xx,xxx.

hey there guys, thank you again so very much for all the replies. I was wondering if i could get another piece of advice from y'all. so I'm going to a mechanic ontuesday, family friend, to have him check the car out. is there anything you recommend me asking him specifically to check out on my truck (01 trd 4x4, approx 250k miles). I was hoping to just get a complete rundown of the truck, and see what shape she is in but any specifics I should ask for would be greatly appreciated. thank you guys again so very much for the previous advice and good vibes y'all sent my way!!

Other than the typical, have him check the frame for rust.

    Best of luck bud.

And lower ball joints, though if I were you I'd change them anyway.

alright guys, in case any of you were interested in any updates on my situation. i took the truck to a good friend/local mechanic who gave it a once over. here is what i can remember what was wrong with it:
-front brake pads and rear shoes need to be replaced
-upper ball joint on drivers side broken, joint and arm need to be replaced
-possible missing vent hose from manual transmission
-needs new tires (not right away, but getting there)
    -drive belts beginning to crack
-missing battery hold down (being held down with a bungee cord )

thats about it. all the fluids, joints, bearings, bushings and frame was in great shape.

a buddy of mine (a jeep owner of all things) and i did the brakes yesterday, and seeing as how i had no idea what i was doing he saved me around 300$.

next on the list it battery hold down (if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated) and tires, then belts (maybe try to tackle those myself) then uppber ball joints and arms and replacing different boots that are cracking.

i have some questions about the suspension currently on my truck. from what i can see there is ibach springs and some sort of Billstein shocks in front, then the stock Billstein shocks in the back, with (aftermarket?) shackles. if anyone maybe could tell me what i have going on down there i would appreciate it, especially since the closest shop who would be able to tell me what i am running is about an hour away (thank you Bay Area traffic!). pics below. Anyways again thank you very much for all the good vibes coming my way.

    The Bed is stock...ish
Looks like stock shackles and leaf springs from that angle.

The front coils are adjustable. The jam nuts on the bottom of the shock give it away. I was thinking toytech, but I can't find that specific model in the website, but I didn't look too hard.. the jam nuts look just like the shocks on my Tacoma, and they are toytech.

"Mexican" may have been the correct term, it depends on what he meant. It describes a country of origin. Hispanic, however, is an ethnicity. A black man from Mexico is a Mexican but not Hispanic.

yea, I saw that too and it kinda surprised me... I wouldn't drive it until that was fixed.

As for the mileage issue, you may have overpaid based on book value. The real value of the truck doesn't drop that much just because it has more miles than you expected. I would suspect more than half of the 1st gen trucks sold these days have inaccurate odometer readings. If you like the truck and are happy with it otherwise... it sucks that you overpaid for it but so be it. Fix the few issues it has and drive it for another 200k mi.

Take legal action if you feel it is necessary but you're not going to come out of they any better off financially than you are now.
