Do the modifiers remove the fitting(breather) from the diff. and then add the metal tubing without the original fitting / breather ,to a different location with a cap on the end ? If they don't the original breather is still in the system .If you still do not get it I understand you are playing dumb, or ? In either case I feel for you as it takes a village . You win as all it takes is participating in todays world .
    Thanks for playing !
modifiers - ( the participants who changed the rear end diff breathing point to allow for using under water )
They -( the modifiers of the original system )
people- ( the modifiers of the original system)
If you do not get this you will never understand ).

The original breather is removed from the system. A clear breather, nipple, is added to the differential housing from a Camry application.

I have come to that realization . Do not let it bother you, not all "people" have the ability to do so.
I am just trying to come up with a thought provoking solution to the problem of the howling to get it solved and fixed .

Holy shit I would go back and make them rewrite that. Anyone who reads that will not know what the hell they performed. I'd want that for future issues after warranty expired.

I would like to see them do this as well, but the dealership would probably not be paid by Toyota for the time it takes to perform the inspection.

I would also like to see a video of how the differential and drive shaft is installed by the factory. I wonder how much banging around the front of the third member sees during vehicle assembly.

I would guess the third member comes with the axle from the axle plant.

Received the same paper from Toyota about the buzzing in the steering wheel. They must have thousands of these printed out ready to mail to us suckers.

    Mostly stuff I built.
Well I got mine replaced today. Broke it in the way I have always done new gears. 15-20 miles cool down for 30-45 minutes then another 15-20 and cool down to work harden the gear faces. Seems to be good but time will tell. Really wanted to bench test them but was not able to. Did inspect the gear pattern with some grease and it was good on the original differential. Both gear sets were factory checked in 3 locations for gear pattern. You could still see traces of the yellow check die on the original differential believe it or not. All the bearings that we could see with out disassembling looked pretty good as well. The housing was also clean with no more metal than normal break in would cause.

So almost 2 weeks after my service visit, I get a call back from the dealership. They apparently had a call with the Regional Toyota service guy and explained my issues as well as the issues they've seen on other new trucks on the lot. Want to know the response?

Normal.......part of the "break in" of the rear end gears. Ticket closed.....

I have a 2016 Tacoma TRD OR 4x4 purchased in late Feb. My truck has been to the dealership 3 times for a humming sound in the rear end at speeds from 55-60 while easing off the pedal. The Toyota dealership called me yesterday afternoon to inform me that they were replacing the rear end. Does anyone have information to the cause of this problem?

It should only be replaced if there is metal shavings in the fluid. Other wise, the noise is normal

Recalls are issued for safety problems. Diff howling is not a safety problem, so far anyway. Haven't heard widespread cases of diffs locking up.

In Fight Club they had the conversation in a plane. Little did they know the plane mfr probably used similar equations for deciding recalls (aviation equivalent being ADs).

Harmonic can be quite damaging depending on magnitude of the vibration. Remember that bridge collapse in... Tacoma?

They always leave out the last part of the sentence..."normal.....for the new Tacoma."

Doesn't do much good there, they have determined internally that the situation is ok...for their business. At the end of the day saying it is normal will be more profitable for them than making it silent (like the rest of the new vehicles on the road), whatever the final outcome may be.

As a consumer you're stuck with it as Toyota is essentially telling you that is the best they are willing to do. Sucks for it to happen on such an expensive product that you can't "return" or for it to happen in a situation where you as a single buyer don't have much power financially to guide their business.

I guess that's just how it happens. All you and I can do is use our experience to make an educated decision on our next vehicle purchase.

still point is, I wonder how accurate that really is. Whether it be safety or mechanical issue. Do they actually compare the cost of the recall to the lawsuits and then decide.

Thing is if its just a sound problem that's not the end of the world.
Annoying yes, but there are somewhat simple fixes that you can do about it like more soundproofing, just keeping the radio up a little more.
The concern I have is if its a mechanical issue. Think about it, tacomas are used for off road more than most other pick ups, what if it ends up being mechanical and someone gets stranded out on the trails?
