My moms 98 Camry did the same thing, my tacos front bumper is slightly diff white then the rest of the truck. I think it's just diff materials being painted. I've noticed it on a lot of toyotas. Doesn't stick out unless you're looking for it really

Plastic always has a different shade than metal...its very common in all vehicles.

There's a lot that goes into this problem. Many different aspects go into this and it all starts at the factory.
Most vehicles these days are sprayed with the bumpers and small plastic pieces in an entirely different building or at different batches all in all. So along with the difference that could have changed between air pressure, temp, humidity you have the more obvious different batch of paint.

Like someone else posted in here there is also most likely a flex additive added to the bumpers paint. More product and a slightly different chemical make up of the paint can cause a different pull on the pigments when drying/curing depending on how they are sprayed.

Next up... The way newer vehicles are painted tend to lend to a very very lean paint job meaning there is normally the smallest amount of paint applied to achieve a uniform finish. Big issue with that is, most never vehicles have a slightly translucent finish where you can almost see the undercoating color through the paint.

Add all of these problems up and you can start to see why colors don't always match!!! Fun stuff.

This is the reason why I had over 350 spray out cards made in just the last 3 years I painted. Lol :bananadead:

You're guys aren't necessarily wrong and most would give this exact same excuse. I did a lot. Like every day someone brought it up to me. Lol

Yes, it can be fixed though! With lots of time and spray out cards. You basically have to go through paint your hardest colors with different shades of undercoatings and spray different amounts of paint as you go down the spray out card. Same as you've seen guys do 3 stage pearl colors but with those pita reds, blues, greens, oranges that never match. I would venture to say I have a solid 20 spray out cards for toyota 3R3.

I work in a body shop too this is just paint flop......from metal to plastic its always slightly different. Every car is like this some are just hard to notice if you want to see a really good example look at a white tri coat lexus the whites look really off from the factory....we even had a lady come pick her car up and say her bumper didn't match we asked her to go by the Lexus dealer and take a look at her exact car. She called back and said she had no idea they were like that

Yeah that's the hard part. It took me a few years to understand the importance of figuring out colors before it even makes it to The paint dept. Past few years though I normally did my spray outs for cars I knew I would get the next day as early as possible. Verify color and if it was wrong fix it from there. It was a lot of time spent getting it right but not time wasted since once I figured out most of the colors I was able to just grab my cards. Check and paint.

I used to tell customers upfront when they were dropping off their cars...look there, see how it doesn't match right now? It will look as good, or better, but it's not going to match...it never did. so let's just get that out of the way right now.
You can yell at me for the porter stealing your change, or for getting your car back with a Mexican radio station blaring, but you're not going to complain about the color match on your bumper.

Lol nice! Estimators who did the same were my favorite! It's something that most should learn to explain on almost every car that comes in. I've found that is one of the most used complaints from customers. Oh and the "that scratch/dent wasn't there before"
I would find Old damage not marked constantly and go and grab the estimate to make and take a picture of it.

So...everyone else with infernos has the mismatched bumper? Was just checking to make sure my dealer didn't repaint the front before I got it because of the "hold up" before delivery when it came off the train.

Mine isn't to bad but I've seen a few rough ones come through the same dealer where mine came from. Check over the bumper for any dirt nibs in the paint. Most likely they didn't get it perfect.

Ya I'm an estimator and I make sure of that.No one likes doing stuff twice especially when you aren't getting paid to redo it

All the infernos I've seen its the same story. The grill doesn't perfectly match the hood either for the same reason.

If the dealer had repainted your bumper it would be easier to look for masking marks and overspray which there would certainly be at least SOME.

It's all good, this is why TW is a great forum to discuss all topics. I respect your viewpoint. I have been painting ( aircraft/auto/and everything else) since the age of 18 and 40 years later I have never had a mismatch fender. I've used all kinds of different types of spray equipment from 5 gallon pressure pots to the simple gravity guns and siphon cups and can say equipment has a lot to do with the finish product. It's a science where the air pressure, correct spray gun set up and proper agitation is vital to getting a consistent coverage. Just because it's a spray gun, does not make it the right spray gun for a specific type of paint. A quality spray gun can cost $600+ and not all painters invest in the right equipment when you need multiple types of guns for spraying colors and clears. A true painter will have guns for each type of paint (primers/metallic base paints/clears costing thousands. Yes you can use one spray gun for everything but if your guns needle set is 1.3 and the paint requires a needle set of 1.8, it will show:) $.02

As someone mentioned prior in this thread, I believe whoever Toyota has making Grilles or Bumpers also has them paint them before delivery which then ends up having the slight mismatch.
