I've noticed the sound barely registers over the sound of the door locks too. I really only hear it when I'm actually standing at the tailgate. You're right, this IS a great mod, totally worth doing.

I haven't even looked at the factory wiring harness, nor ordered my kit, so excuse the possibly dumb question. You're still splicing the lock actuator wiring into the pigtail, correct? I'm curious why you soldered instead of just putting pins on both ends of the wires?

Edit: nevermind, I see that the wires were already pinned. So, I want to get the Toyota connectors, but build my own pinned wires. Anybody know what male and female pins will fit? Would those be the ones that @adobe18 linked?

Pretty sure any truck accessory place can install them for you. It's usually an option when ordering a tonnueau cover.

By installing the Pop N Lock or equivelent actuator and tying it to the the doors wiring, will tampering with the tailgate set off the alarm? Here in the 808, tailgates are the targets of thief's and i was wondering if this would help by triggering the alarm.

The Tacoma tailgates do not have a trigger to set off factory alarm. You could tie in a universal hood pin to trigger one of the entry points. I'm using a hood pin in my tailgate to trigger my LED bed lights instead of tying to cargo lamp circuit.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Makes sense, I could tie the trigger that's on my hood and put one in back. Tks

I'll be trying this on the weekend, ordered the parts should be arriving Thursday or Friday. The only difference is ill be entering the cabin thru a grommet underneath the passenger side kick panel and tap into the door lock circuit there so I don't have to go all the way to the engine bay. I'll be using the back-up camera wiring route. Will post pictures when I'm done.

This is a really neat mod! I didn't even look into this idea until I ran into this vid on youtube. Dealership is charging $940 for a TRD Bed lock feature which does the same thing!

    In SouthEast Toyota territory it's a $259 MSRP / $175 Invoice port-install option.

Anyone paying $940 for that option at whatever dealer you're talking about deserves to pay that as a tax on their inability to use Google.

The 17 Ford F250 has a power tailgate. It lowers the tailgate with a button on the fob. Pretty cool.

I just walked out to the truck, and it's $259.00, not $940. Also not a "TRD Bed Lock", just the factory tailgate lock. I was like "what the heck" when I saw $940.00

I bet he got the "TRD Beadlock wheels" confused with TRD Tailgate lock.

I'm curious as to the total amount of time to do the mod.

I finally go around do doing mine last weekend, took about 2.5 hours really taking my time to do it carefully and leaving absolutely no sign that it is an aftermarket mod. If you have all the materials and wanted to do it quickly, it can be done in 1-1.5 hours.

FYI- I did mine with 16 gauge speaker wire, split loom, as well as adding a waterproof disconnect. I have quite a bit of material left if anyone is interested that i could sell.

Also took me about 2.5-3 hours. the measuring part for the lock actuator rod was what took me the most.

Would this be similar to the gas cap lock? I heard it's possible. I don't like the idea of people getting into my gas
