Just wondering what kinda of oil everyone is using in their 3.5? I know you should follow manufacturer specs. Just wondered what brand.

The top brands I have heard people use on this forum are Mobil 1 and Royal Purple.

If replacing every 10k then Royal Purple or Amsoil is the best. But todays oil standards you can use just about any major oil brand synthetic. Pennsoil, Mobil 1, Quakerstate, Amsoil, Castrol. Usually go with Castrol in the Jeep and the daughters car and Amsoil in the Harley. Letting Toyota deal with it for the first 2 years then probably Castrol after that.

Portuguese or Italian? I've heard that Italian has slightly better additive packs! ;)

No the full synthetic that Toyota pumps out of a large vat....

Toyota Synthetic is made by Mobil1 "TO TOYOTA SPECS"

    Here's the read:

In a small container it looks like this and has been tested to beat Mobil 1 synthetic:

I am sure the stuff in the sealed bottles are fine. But when you go to the dealer for an oil change. They are using stuff they have in the container they purchase mass volume of. Dont think I have seen them pull 6 unopened qts for in house oil changes.

First off, I will say I have always been a Royal Purple guy. I have used it in all my trucks I've owned (Z-71, FX4, RAM). I live in Houston, and grew up literally 5 minutes away from the factory... so it was kind of a no brainier for me.

That being said, I had my 5k service last week, and wanted to take in my own oil and filter, so I could do my first oil change while it was up on the rack getting the service done. So the week prior I spent as much free time as I could deciding what oil I would be using, as I typically stick with the same brand throughout the life of the vehicle. Can't say why I didn't just go with Royal Purple right off the bat, but I figured I might as well do some research and see what else is out there... researched Bob's site, youtube, etc.

First off any 100% pure synthetic oil, your pretty much splitting hairs.... It's a pure synthetic, it's going to do its job, and do its job well... that being said, I still wanted to know more. I was originally leaning towards Redline as it has wonderful reviews... But availability is so hard to come across here in the Houston area, so I kept looking. Eventually I came across Amsoil Signature Series. I've always known the Amsoil name, just never had a reason to use the stuff. But after doing my homework, I decided to give it a try, and will be using it as my oil from this point forward, barring some kind of problem.

I'll be honest, this is one of the main things that swayed me from Royal Purple:

Now to be fair, this test was commissioned by Amsoil, but it was also done by an independent 3rd party... but take time a watch the whole thing, the results are very interesting. I really like the fact that it compares all of the best synthetic oils on the market today.

***Results of study can be viewed here:***
    http://wpc.1c96.edgecastcdn.net/001C96/G-Items/Performance Testing Archives/g3115-5w30-study-archived-2013/files/html5/index.html

Additionally, this video also had great info.:

Also, the Amsoil Signature Series is GUARANTEED for 25k miles or 1 year.... now, I'm not going to run it that long... hell, I'm not even going to run it 10k miles, more like 5k - 6k between changes... but if it's good enough for 25k miles, it's damn well good enough for 5k miles.

One of the only drawbacks I found is Amsoil does not let their products be sold by 3rd parties on secondary markets; i.e. you can't find their products on Amazon or Ebay, etc. Which yeah, kind of sucks, but I was lucky enough that my local NAPA dealer had some, and now that I know what I'm sticking with, I can order it through Amsoil direct if my NAPA store runs out.

As far as oil filter, I'd say either TRD Pro filter (Part #43-00082) or the Amsoil Ea filter (Part #EA15K02)... or any other high end filter would work; K&N, Royal Purple, etc. This is another thing I like about Amsoil just in general... they specify their results. They don't just say it's a filter that's rated at 98% or 100% efficiency (which all filters can technically be at a certain micron level)... they specify that it's 98.7% efficient at 20 micron.

One more thing, since it sounds like you'll be doing a oil change in the near future, you may also want to consider using a fuel treatment/additive. Something like Amsoil PI fuel additive or Royal Purple Max Clean. Just a good idea once every 5k miles, or around every oil change... will keep your valves and piston heads cleaner, and help with carbon buildup. Just my .02

Oh, and here's another part you will need for oil change, Drain Plug Gaskets:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007OW6MD6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hope all this helps, didn't mean to come off as some kind of Amsoil fan boy, I was just in your place 2 weeks ago, so all the info. is still fresh on my mind, and glad I could pass along and help.
