i replaced the power steering pump 3 months ago. it was bad. problem solved. recently a very similar sound came back. engine sounds normal when cold but a whirring sound gets louder as engine warms up. the noise gets quieter when i turn so pretty sure its not the pump. gets louder with higher engine speed. i replaced the ac idler today after finding this thread last night. still whirring now :(. any guesses?

oops. i think i was wrong. i now believe it is the power steering pump again. took the power steering belt off and noise is gone. 1/4" of play in and out on pump pulley.

My whine is actually more of a steady squeal. I just have a 4cyl, no turbo charge. 2005 SR5.

The whine happens during acceleration. When I back off, it goes away. Hard to tell if it happens during cruising, as its 5speed.

Mine whines at idle, and gets louder under hard acceleration and stops after I let off the skinny pedal....

I am also experiencing a whine on a 98 Tacoma. The shop has already replaced power steering pump and harmonic balancer. I think this helped. Before the power steering pump replacement it was worse on turns. Now it still whines when I start it up after it sits a while but seems to get better as I drive until it basically fades into nothing. I am in Dallas and it has been unusually cold lately which may be making this worse.

I asked the guy about the idler pulley second time I brought it in he said he would check it. Not sure if he replaced it already or if it was fine. What do you think?

My speedo whines, during the summer months I usually clean all my pulleys and rebuild all the bearings.

Back when I had an '84 4runner, with the 22R motor, that damn bearing would fail suddenly, by SEIZING. It made a horrible screeching sound, white smoke, and an awful smell of a burning belt. Failed like that twice in about 15 years.

Now, I always carry spares (belts AND pulley assemblies).

but why would you replace anything with out pulling belts first and checking what it really was.
I thought my timing chain was slapping but it turns out my alt bearing was bad. Good thing i didnt tear down my motor.

Now that it's been colder in the mornings I've been having a whine similar to the one in the youtube vid. Doesn't seem as loud and it goes away when the truck is warm. A/C idler bearing? Truck only has 115k miles.
