3rd Gen BHLM + Retrofit Projector

for those that have done this mod. do you think the mod could be done in a day? Was planning to do it early sunday but need to put them back on for work the next day.

 

If you have never done a retrofit I would suggest a weekend so there is no rushing. The quickest I have done a retrofit MH1 in my old tundra was 3ish hours with painting and everything.

If you start early enough you might be able to get it done.

I agree. A weekend is best. Especially if you never done one. Paint cure is 24 hours per the can.

And a weekend plan is if everything goes right. Snap a headlight and it's an 800 dollar whoopsie. It takes me a week. I give a full 7 day cure of the paint before putting it back together.

 

Well can't you close it up after the paint dries and let the curing happen when it's closed up?

yeah, i'll probably do it that way. Just so hard to find time to do it. Having my sister take my son to Disneyland so i have some free time to work on it.

 

It really depends on the paint you use as well. I swear by Krylon Fusion paint. I have never prepped a surface such as scuffing and cleaning and the paint adheres perfectly. Dry to touch within 10min they say but I try to give it 30 or so before handling and I always hold the non painted surfaces. The only concern really is when putting a painted part back in the headlight without waiting to long is chipping the paint or finger prints.
It is getting harder to source the paint locally now, every store keeps replacing it with their own brand of paint.

So I've decided to go ahead and do this. I'm going to do it a little differently though. My 2016 is MGM so rather than going black, i'll be using MGM instead. I will also tint the amber signal like you guys have done, looks much better.

Automotivetouchup.com sells very high quality products. I plan to use their plastic primer which is designed to promote adhesion to plastics including chrome plated plastic. I will scuff the chrome with 0000 steel wool, wash very well, then prime. I will then use their paint and high gloss clear. I've used their products before and I was very happy. They even smell like the same paints used in body shops.

As far as resealing the housings, what's everyone's opinion of this?

I think when I do mine I'm going to paint the majority of the inner signal section also. Get rid of as much chrome as possible. I'm running LED bulbs there anyway, they'll still be plenty bright.

 

What paint is everyone using. At Home Depot and the amount of paint is overwhelming lol

l have done a few retros and search for some butyl tape on ebay. I know they have black and grey as colors. It is sold by the roll and you can form it in to a long rope that can be pressed in to the lens channel.

 

I have that already, I use it whenever running wires through an aftermarket grommet in a firewall to seal everything up. It never hardens, stays soft and gets even softer when heated. Definitely not what I want to use to seal up my headlights permanently.

 

Ahhhh a permanent seal. I have never used anything permanent for my headlights. I would not know what to use in a permanent application. You should try hidplanet, maybe you will fine an answer there.

 

What color is this?

Also what temperature and exact amount of time have you been baking them for? Thanks
