I had ZERO issues with my first 2016 SR5 Access Cab V6 4x4 until 5100 miles. Then it failed (and I got a new truck), and have had zero issues with it (700 miles). But once bitten, twice shy as they say. I am reticent to head out into the backwoods to play - where a wrecker can't make it. I would hate to be seen being rescued by an H3!

The final Truck Assembly Plant should not matter as I would imagine the Sensor was probably installed at the Engine Assembly Plant.

I doubt there's a correlation between assembly plants and failures. CPS wasn't produced by Toyota, Toyota did stop using the now obsolete part.

As far as I've read my 2017 is the only one I've heard of having symptoms of a bad CPS, my sensor was the new one too. 4500 miles since replacement with another new one and no issues (knock on wood).

One of the Ford Super Duty 7.3's few issues was a CPS issue. They did a recall, as trucks just shutting off was not good. A lot of guys carried a spare, but the International CPS used in their "T444" engines were a preferred replacement to the Ford replacement, which they replaced with a new P/N part.

I read a great deal on this forum on my codes, then posted up a thread. It was suggested I had a bad CKP (CKP is Toyota-speak for CPS) even though I did not display a CKP code. Toyota was unwilling to sell me the upgraded 90919-05098 part, telling me it was a service only part. Let's just say I got one anyway and leave out the details. Interestingly enough, the CKP I had already pulled off my truck (build date 6/16) was already the new part, and of course I had not been recalled as others had. I checked and found no outstanding recalls on my VIN. While I am somewhat skeptical the issue is CKP since I showed no CKP code, AND I have the "new/upgraded" part in my vehicle originally, I installed the new part I bought today. Of course it runs fine now, but things do run fine, until they don't, right? I am not certain that this is a fix, but from many hours of reading it seems the right thing to do.
I found that the NEW new part no longer has the circle hash marks, it has what appears to be 2 parallel lines like an equals sign, and the tiny imprinted numbers are now 0972 06U27 versus the original part being 0971 04T16. Picture provided of the two, NEW new part on left, original part on right. I suppose I would not launch on a cross country trip right now, but the best I could do would be a cross island trip, and I'm going to stick to surface streets for now. I have only driven it about 25 miles post installing the new CKP. Was a TSB ever issued for this problem, or was it just a recall for early production models prior to sometime before 6/16? Toyota is definitely aware of it, the Dealership Parts department is hoarding this part and is not selling it to people.
Installation I did laying under the truck, 1/4" drive ratchet w 3" extension and 10mm deepwell socket. It was not difficult to do it this way, and I figure it could be done "on the trail" so long as the CAT had cooled off a bit. No need to pull off tire, remove wheel well flap, etc.
I do not know if this is helpful to this thread, or to this forum, but it's another data point, and of course I will fill in later if everything is hunkey dorey, but how long would it be to the next breakdown anyway?

Test drove 5 kms and does seem to run smoother with lower idle rpm
