Yeah the wheels are Bad Ass!! Thanks for the feedback on the Drilling. I'll use the same method when drilling the hood mounts for the Hood struts. Drill Bit wrapped with Electrical tape or actually use the Drill guide accessory that in most cases is never used. It always gets kicked to the curb! Need to pickup some of that 1/8" foam tape. Walmart and AMAZON are showing the same price For the Astro. Harbor Freight has a rivnut tool but I'm going with the Astro. Put my Bf Goodrich Rugged fails on CL at Lunch time today and they sold in less than 10 minutes! Here's the truck with the New Tar package. These Falkens are super Quite, I would say the equivalent to Highway Tars. Thanks Again Nick! Your Trucks Looking Awesome!

 

@Crom - Nick did you end up adding a New TPMS to the New spare?

 

Rebuilt drive shaft is in!

• Three (3) brand new
  $32 Spicer 5-1330-1X U-Joint Kit
  Spicer 5-1330-1X U-Joint Kits installed.
• One (1) brand new Genuine Toyota OEM Carrier Support Bearing (CSB) installed.
• Slip yoke packed with fresh grease.

Prior to installing I thoroughly inpsected the new u-joints. The joints at the ends of the shaft had some pressure in them that I didn't like. This is a side effect of pressing them in. To relive the pressure I used a heavy narrow punch and hammer to strike the inside edges "ears" of the shaft. It worked. U-joints turn easier. Other than that, I can find nothing not to like about the work I had done. I marked everything with paint, even the orientation of the band clips on the slip yoke boot cover. Everything went back together exactly as it had come out.

Installed and tested up to 50 mph. So far I'm very pleased.

I will measure drive line angles quite soon and report back.



One thing that I've learned from reading is that before torquing the bolts of the center support bearing (CSB), it's important to make sure it's dead center. If not, then a compound angle will be introduced into the driveline potentially causing unwanted vibrations. My CSB could move about 3/8" left or right.

One solution is to measure using a string.

I tied a string around the zerk at the rear axle.


Then pull the end of the string so it's dead center with the zerk at the transfer case.


Now observing the CSB, use the hole in the bottom as a guide to find centerline, and finally torque bolts proper.


I'm really glad it's back in, and I didn't kill myself.

Our owners manual calls for checking DS bolt torque every 30K as a standard maintenance item as far as I remember (AFAIR) lol.

I personally know only one person who's done this. In my experience mine never moved from factory after 69K miles.

Anyways, the point is if you have ever tried, it's not possible to get a torque wrench in there, not enough room. So the solution is a torque wrench adapter. I bought a cheapie from Amazon for $10 so I could get the job done.

Here is the bad boy attached to a 1/2" to 3/8" drive adapter, and my Harbor Frieght torque wrench, and yes I trust the wrench!!!

Now without getting complicated, if the torque adapter is 90* to the shaft of the torque wrench then no engineering formula is required to compensate.

Just set to 65 ft.lbf and get in there and torque it solid.



Worked like a dream.

Oh and I had to use a cheater pipe to hold the nut / bolt head.


Harbor Freight 3 ton jack handle is perfect!!! Winning!!! Leverage for days, weeks, months!!! lol


After everything was checked twice, I used my white paint pen and indexed everything, so if anything moves, I'll know at a glance.

 

Thats the kind of attention to detail that really really stands out to me!

 

EDIT: I was wrong. DS bolts are M11x1.0

Here is something I found that I don't understand.

The rear drive shaft bolts are not pure metric and not USS either, unless I'm completely misunderstanding...

They measured perfectly 7/16 diameter, 1-5/8" long, and appear to be 28 or 24 thread pitch. Yet the head is 14mm though. That seems strange to me!

The paint pen is a good trick. If you look closely at the bolts/nuts in my past photos, almost all have them red or white paint pen treatment. Basically anything that gets touched by me that I deem vital for the truck.

On the day the drive shaft went in I told my oldest kid and she said I want to see it! She had seen it laying in the garage for over a week so she knew what it was. Onto the creeper she went and under the truck she disappeared. Then after a few minutes the questions started. Dad, did you paint this? She saw the white paint. This blue thing, is that new? (u-joint). Yes. Did you clean the DS? It's so clean. lol. She understands that the the DS spins and turns gears which makes the wheels move. She knows that much. Anyways just something fun that happened in my day!

i have some bolt heads holding a skid in place, that fit a 14mm box and open craftsmen wrench, but a new 14mm socket does not fit. they are not metric heads, just seems like they are, don't remember which US size they are now.... ; )

 

I did some searching... According to Yotamasters, the DS bolts on Tacoma are M11 x 1.0.

7/16 = 11.1125 mm... Very close!

Not too sure about your skid plate bolt.
