Im in the process of putting a turbo on my truck and the other night I started to mount my intercooler and ran out of daylight so I just threw a filter on it till I could finish it. it's 2.5" tubing and I have noticed via torque app, that on a stock intake on a warm engine at idle the lowest fuel consumption rate was .40 gal/hr and with this set up I have seen it dip to around .25 gal/hour and has no problem sitting at .30-.32/hr which is 20% btw so at idle I now and running 20% more efficient. I assume this is due in part to smaller tubing so less air but also, I have noticed that my load% will get in the single digits some and that never happened before so that may have some effect as well. (yes that's a spectre maf flange)

I think skyrider is right on with my thoughts as well. So several of us have felt very similar improvements! I think it was worth it, others may not. To each his own, we can only give our personal opinions. My dad once asked for my opinion in front of a customer and I gave it and he didn't like my opinion so he said, "your opinion sucks so shut the f:"#/@ up"! Just thought I'd throw that out there. LOL

I don't think it is less air but more like increased velocity of the same amount of air the engine is pulling in due to the smaller tubing. More velocity, more fun. Same thing the turbo does, increase velocity of intake air.

yeah I understand the higher velocity which I what I think causes the lower load but if my afr's are pretty much constant and im burning less fuel (atleast at idle/coasting) I have to be putting less are in or it would lean way out if there was the same amount or more air and 20% less fuel

Mine does the same exact thing. I'm about to take it out and sell it if I can't get rid of that. At high RPM's, it's unbearable. I heard people reference A plug to fix it, but have no idea what they are talking about. Can anyone help??

There's a plug that comes with it from the factory. It's used to close off the hole where the scoop would go into, just a rubber plug. Do you have that installed?

This is probably a dumb question...can anyone confirm that in aFe's self dyno here the difference in SAE factor of only 0.02 adequately compensates for the -16.5 degree temp, baro change, and +33% humidity differences?

I'll admit, the reviews I am reading on here are quite positive overall, which is nice to see. But I am a little suspicious of this 'run the OEM intake in the evening when it is hot and run the new one early in the morning when it is cold' method. Just looks like the test is set up to fudge the numbers a bit to look as good as possible.

I'll chip in like $5 bucks if someone volunteers to go get independently dyno'd (stock--->quick swap-->aFe)...I like science...don't you like science?

Edit: Note I am not thread crapping. Once I get my truck I will seriously consider one of these, even for mild/moderate gains in the butt dyno and some fun sounds for wide-open throttle times. The 3rd gen is quite quiet and polite with the stock intake.

Follow-up thought (I posted this in the TRD intake thread also):

Anyone else notice the aFe intake is *not* CARB compliant for California?

I wonder if that provides more validity to the anecdotal reports here of better MPG and a little better power? aFe posted that dyno plot but it looks (very) optimistic. I am curious if there is some validity to their power claims if they are somehow trading emissions compliance for power/efficiency...much like what VW did with their ECU programming scandal? Not sure how you would do that via intake design, but it's a curious thought....

How did you get the fuel rate per hour on torque?

Looking at the picture of the setup above the only way you could possibly develop any ram air "pressure" is if the port to the fender was sealed. As it is all pressure is lost out that port. Note how tiny the opening is to the throttle body compared to the side opening. And guys are believing that making a second big opening in the stock box is going to help?

The "scoop" doesn't look free flowing at all.

but it comes with a throttle body spacer and it says "power" in big letters on the scoop so if you didn't have it you wouldn't make any

TB spacer is the biggest scam out there. If you believe they work, just wait till you pair it with the Tornado!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with you. In cooler temps you are going to have better results. I have a 04 sti and running on a cool night to a humid night is a huge difference. Also I don't see anywhere on the sheet where it says which vehicle they dyno'd.
