Rotella T6?

has anyone put this in their engine to "clean it out"? I have seen people on other forums run this in their gas engines, but it sounds pretty terrifying to try myself.

Anyone done it in their first gens?

 

Lots of folks run diesel oils in their engines. Couple buddies of mine run it exclusively in everything from their lawn mower to their miatas. As long as you buy the appropriate weight there shouldn't be any bad side effects

 

Yeah, diesel oil has some extra additives that are supposed to help bearing life, along with a few other things. the Major use for it by the non-diesel community is for the Subaru Guys, Diesel oil MASSIVELY reduces blow-by in boxer engines.

 

I wonder if it would do any good for my engine to run it for one oil change interval...

 

No. And you wouldn't know if it did anything for you unless you did both a pre and post change oil testing, combined with a visual examination of the valve train and oil pan/crank assembly.

But it won't hurt anything either.

It's a great oil. Many co-racers of mine with small displacement hi-rev motors run it exclusively. @The Driver here runs it in both his 1st gen and his old Miata.

However, like any oil of that nature, if you're not willing to do some lab testing, then move to extended OCIs to take advantage of the quality of the oil, don't bother. The 3k interval guys can use whatever is on sale OTC, because modern dino oils (API SN) are almost as good as the synthetics of 10 years ago. But they can't let go of the 3k interval 'because oil is cheap insurance'. And that's what the sticker on the windshield (or door jamb) of dad's car said when they were a kid.

 

If your objective is to clean out the internals of the motor, I use the bg109, cut my oil consumption in half. Good products.

 

Rotella T6 is not labeled as "Energy Conserving" which is what Toyota recommends. It's a great oil, though and a lot of people use it in gasoline engines. Bill is absolutely correct in saying that you're just playing "guess how clean my engine is" unless you get an oil analysis done. Check out blackstone labs to get a test kit and see what your engine is actually up to.

 

As brother Bill stated, I use it in both my 1996 Miata, and my 2002 TRD 4WD. I have used it on my Miata for 6 years now, and used it on the Taco since I got her, four years ago.
Excellent oil, just two weeks ago, I replaced the Miata head, for that of a 2000 Miata, with a 2005 intake cam, as they are considered power mods.

The old head was virtually perfect, with no abnormal scoring or marks. Just so you know, I replace the oil once a year, or every 15K miles, whichever comes first.

Yeah, I actually just stopped using Mobil 1 and put PYB (pennzoil yellow bottle) in my truck last oil change since I always change it at 5k miles anyways. No point in wasting money on synthetic if I don't need it!

I think I'm gonna do a blackstone test once I hit 200k. I have 30k to go.

 

really? How's that work with a wet clutch?

 

It's JASO certified and wet clutch compatible due to it not being energy conserving. I run it in my Vstrom 650 and have basically since I bought it. I have yet to run an analysis but that's soon to change.

 

High zddp, great for old motors that need it. Helps protect metal on metal by creating a film. Phosphorous can kill a catalytic converter quick if you're using oil though. Modern oils have much less zddp to deal with emissions.

 

I used it in my bike also, no prob. in any gas engine. Just not energy conserving......never noticed, mileage is crap anyway.
I don't think you'll do much cleaning with 1 cycle though.

 

I'm glad I'm not the only Miata fan on here...

 

I use it in my 6.7l powerstroke, 300zx twin turbo, rincon atv, Tacoma, and new holland tractor. I love the stuff.

 

It works exceptional well... its the only synthetic motor oil that works without haveing to buy stupid expensive motorcycle only oil.....and on a litter bike

 

Nice! I'll have to start using this in my bike then. How long do you go before you change the oil in your bike since you're running Rotella?

 

It's a great oil, but I recommend Pennzoil Platinum. I run it myself and it's advertised to be top notch in engine cleanliness. My engine runs smoother and quieter on it than any other synthetic I've tried so far. A 5 quart jug is $26 at Wally World and an extra quart bottle and filter are about $12, I run it out to 7500 miles without issue. It also shows impressive wear protection in used oil analysis posted over on the Bob is the Oil Guy forums. I'm starting to believe the natural gas base oils are going to surpass PAO and ester base oils in the future, and they're much cheaper to manufacture and produce. It's beat the almighty Amsoil in a few tests already if that says anything.

I run T6 in my Powerstroke, and it made a world of difference with cold starts. The diesel clatter is quieter and smoother as well and it doesn't romp and shake on a cold morning like it did on conventional Rotella 15W-40. I also run the T6 in my quad because it's JASO-MA rated for wet clutches and it made a world of difference with shifting gears, took the clunkiness out of my 400EX engine. You can safely run it in the Taco though without problems, you might see a small hit in gas mileage because there's more resistance with a thicker oil. 5W-40 and 10W-60 is recommended in the Toyota Prado that had the 3.4 engine so it can definitely handle a heavier grade oil.

 

When i was riding daily at 100 miles a day i would change my oil every 3-4 months..i didnt look at milage since my spedo and odometer quit working.. that was 50,000 miles ago lolol...
