Yea the fact that it slows down the engine deceleration helps fix what the op is talking about. I may not be able to explain it properly in physics terms but ive experinced a flywheel wight helping the low end personally on a dirt bike. Take a 125 two stroke with no low end. All the power is once the powervalve opens. U put a flywheel weight on that 125 and its gonna have more low end and need less clutch work. In the coners and tight stuff

Sure, but I could just squeeze on the gas of the old 4.3L in an S-10 or a V8 anything and cruise on by without all the drama that this engine needs.

Don't get me wrong, I like my truck and the engine makes plenty of power when needed. I do miss the low end torque though.

Toyota could have updated the 4.0 and got good MPG. The thing is though, Toyota has always offered relatively simple, de-tuned engines for sake of reliability. You want a fancy, turbo-charged engine or engine with cylinder deactivation? Go with a domestic.

its going to be so weird for me once I get mine.
considering I drive a turbo diesel now lol.
I'm used to low end torque and with my turbo set up one hell of a kick at 2300rpm

Meh, V8s get the best of both worlds.... torque and high end power. Nobody wanted a diesel until turbos became common and boosted the horse power. To heck with a Cummins! I say twin turbos on a 572 Big Block Chevrolet!!!!!!!!!

Lol..... this truck will be the exact opposite of your diesel then! It's weird (I'm come from V8 Chevrolets), but overall, the truck is nice. I really think you just let the little 3.5 engine rev and it'll be fine.

ya considering I'm coming from a heavily modified engine VW jetta.
Hell my car can make more torque than the tacoma does. I just don't run it at full power since the transmission can't handle that much.

Being on the highway in 6th gear at 2100rpm its beautiful if I want to pass, I'm right where I start getting 19psi boost lol.

@Woodrow F Call I test drove the 2016 and 2017s though. I didn't actually find it all that sluggish.
I never really floored it though so not sure. That's probably where the taco will be very very different from what I am used to.
But for regular city driving it felt fine. Took it on the highway too it was fine.

I can't give up my VQ40DE and 6spd for this very reason. Lots of low end torque and a dual mass flywheel.

Wonder what they changed between the VQ40 and VQ35... my VQ35DE is pretty similar to the Taco 3.5 honestly. Not much low end power relatively speaking but pulls hard from 3k to redline

Where you might find it sluggish is when you are at cruising speed and need a little umph to speed up or go up a hill...... It likes to shift up into the OD gears and it just doesn't pull well in those gears. Now if you get it to downshift and the engine gets in the RPM band, it'll move. Actually, this little truck will get up in scoot for what it is. You just have to push the go pedal a bit more to get it to go.

+1 on using the ECT button. It is never talked about but it is awesome for stop and go or slow going. I have a 2017 and I love the truck. I can't believe how many people bash the 3.5. There are different things you can do to change the way it drives for varying situations. ECT, Sport Mode, Manually Shift etc.
