Bakflip MX4 Prelim Review

How'd you get that price? Did you have to call?

 

Guys need a little help. Got mine installed. 2013 tacoma bakflip mx4. Is this really mx4? See the end cover? Locking device hits the rail. I have to open the cover before I can close the tailgate? All sort of issue. Obviously it wont be the same for 2016 taco but at least close it and mine just look like G2. Anyone else got this installed on 2013 taco? Thank you for any replies.

 

I haven't installed my mx4 yet I am going to install it after work today or tomorrow on my 11 tacoma but that doesn't look like an MX4 to me. It looks like a g2 or other model.

 

I just installed mine and it is the same way. I have to shut tail gate before closing the cover. I guess they forgot to mention this on their sales add for 05-15 and I guess only the ones for 16 model work as advertised.

 

That is the way the TruXedo Lo Pro operates also. Tailgate close 1st then latch the cover down. Not to bad a routine to get used to doing.

 

Styner can you post a picture? Is yours exactly mine? No emblems? Did you have any issue with the railing? I have emailed Bak industries and pointed out the obvious and also sent them pictures. Just for them to compare and see the obvious differences. Ill see what they say first then if the functionality is not going to be the same as 2016 then most likely i will return the item. Lol i know its not that hard to lift the cover and close the gate but when bakflip advertise it then it should work as advertised. Try to email them and see what they say about your case.

Mine looks exactly like yours and the latching mechanism does hit the rail and kind of hangs a little on the rear driver side. I am going to try and adjust it some so it won't hit if possible. It's not a huge deal for me to have to shut tail gate before closing it but I will probably contact them about it.

 

I figured out on mine that it was the plastic shroud thing that the release cable runs through that was hitting. I pulled the 2 screws that were holding it in place slid it down so it doesn't hit the rail and the screws are self taping so I just screwed them back in. It functions perfectly now.

 

Sounds great. I will try that tomorrow, I actually gave up earlier haha! Did you order your cover directly to bakflip? Thanks again for replying and the tips!

 

I purchased mine from a different company but it was drop shipped directly from bakflip. My boxes shipping label was from bakflip. It was labeled as an MX4 that was built on 9/29/2016 so its not old.

I hate this thing. I spent a ton of money on it and leaks pretty badly. It's so frustrating.

Today we did a complete re-installation of the BAKFlip MX4 Tonneau Cover on our new 2016 Toyota Tacoma. This was requested by BAK Industries after the initial installation completed on August 22, 2016 failed and the tonneau cover leaked badly. I am very disappointed to report that we are no further ahead – BAK Industries have manufactured a completely defective product.

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma is made with a plastic bed rail cover on both sides of the truck by Toyota. This bed rail cover has indents in the molding pattern as part of the Toyota design. BAK Industries have designed and built a side rail system that is not wide enough to compensate for these indents in the Toyota moulding. The water easily leaks in on all four locations where these indents are located on both sides.

Back to BAK Industries to see what they will do since this is a warranty issue and poor design on their part. Little wonder so many have leak issues.

 

I've been wondering the exact same thing about these indents and water leakage on my MX4. It's only been installed for 2 weeks and no leakage so far....but.... it's parked in the garage and I've only driven once in the rain. But I've been looking at these indents a wondering how they would not allow water in.

 

A good way to test - park it in your driveway, get your garden hose without a nozzle and run water over the entire BAKFlip Tonneau cover and watch with your tailgate open.

You will get your answer in short order!

I have sent the same images to BAK Industries who have responded and now this design issue has been sent to Charly Henley and the Engineering Department for a complete review and solution. I have recommended that they redesign the entire bed rail system due to Toyota putting on these fancy bed rails with indents.

I will let you know the outcome when I hear from them.

 

My TruXedo Lo Pro leaks in the same places. Wish I would of bought a Undercover SE or Elite. Then the plastic bed rail cover would not be in play.

 

Three attempts and we have resolved our leaking issues. We live in one of the wettest climates in North America on the west coast of British Columbia so our water issues had to be resolved. This is what we did:

After removing the entire BAKFlip MX4 we started the lengthy process. We used GE Black Silicone II with a life time warranty and a 30 minute set up time.

Warning, we did not use an impact or power tools on these T30 head bolts. The metal is soft so we used hand tools to remove and tighten. We needed a screw extractor to remove one of these bulkhead screws from the previous installation.

After the Toyota bulkhead rail was removed, we also removed the factory installed seal. Yes, it leaked through this. We used a BAK Industries 1/8 inch seal cut in half and installed then added silicone as well. We also used the BAK Industries 1/8 inch seal - full size - on the top side where the Tonneau cover panels rest on.

Now the bed rail from BAK Industries. Remove the plastic drain plugs on the cab end. Get a round file and remove the burrs on the metal drain holes. Take the plastic drain plug and on the end, place a 1/8 inch seal. Take the silicone seal and secure this so that no leaking can occur. Reinsert into the bed rail. Turn the bed rail over and run a generous amount of silicone along the entire length where it sits on the Toyota rail. The more the better.

Install and tighten. Wipe off the excess silicone that will come off the side edge. Now take your silicone and seal both sides of the end caps on the bulkhead and every place that has the potential to leak near the cab.

Set the BAKFlip MX4 panels onto the rail system. Go underneath where the bolts are tightened (don't do it yet) and seal with silicone the areas where you see light coming in. You will need a kind person with a bright mag light to shine from the outside to expose any light on the inside.

Seal it up. Complete the installation with the panels and tightened the bolts.

By the time you are finished, from the rear tailgate you should not see any natural light coming into the front corners.

It rained Saturday night after our Friday installation and presto it was totally dry inside.

Holy smokes! Was this the recommendation from BAK? Mine leaked at the rails where the factory rail dips down when I tested it out in Friday. I also have a new problem a torn flange seal. I will be contacting BAK tomorrow about this too. Are they looking into this design flaw?

 

This is the message we got from our supplier - PartsEngine.ca in Canada and there contact with the manufacturer - BAK Industries. We went well over and beyond the advice given below:

As for the torn flange seal shown in the above image I am uncertain as to how BAK Industries will respond. I don't think any sealer would work and what impact this will have in the folding process is any ones guess. It will get worse over time.

Thank you for informing us, we apologize for the delayed reply as we were updating our ticketing system this week. We have followed up with the manufacturer again and spoke to someone in the tech support department. They have informed us that due to the design on the side rails, that any other cover would give you this issue and that covers are not 100% water proof. However, if you loosen the bolts holding the clamps in place and apply downward pressure on the rail to close that gap. BAK has also informed us that you may also apply a dab of RTV sealant to close it up. Due to the design of the bed caps from Toyota any tonneau cover on the market has the same challenges.


RTV Silicone, which you can get at your local Home Depot, would solve this issue with the water leaking in.
