Invoice isn't the dealers true cost. The advertising is money that they spend on advertising, so it's essentially part of the cost. Holdback is profit, but when they sell a truck at invoice, they have the salesperson commission, overhead, and finance cost. Invoice is pretty much their cost when you figure all that in. Since there is no rebate on a 16, I would get a 17. Where I am, the 16's are all gone anyway, except for a access cab or two. I would think you should be able to buy one for $500 over invoice if you are patient and firm. At the end of the day, the dealer's cost isn't as much of an issue as the demand and supply. I can buy a Ram pickup for $15K off MSRP, but in the end I wanted a truck that will hold it's value, and not have repair issues at 80K.

Could possibly be your region, or I could be missing something, but when I check NADA for Invoice on that build for my area, it comes out to about $33,500 with the options you list. That's pretty close to what they're offering you, and seems like a decent deal if MSRP is around $36,200ish.

The $32,085 figure seems to be closer to what I get as Invoice without any of the added options.

Invoice is right about 5% less than MSRP, or about $2000 on a $37K truck.. What can change that percentage is the dealer adds. They do their best to make them look like they are from the factory. Gulf States Toyota has adds that are installed at the port that are part of the window sticker, like protection packages, running boards, led lights in the bed, etc. Adds like tint, pinstripe, and nitrogen are usually dealer adds that can have ridiculous markup. I've seen $1995 addendums for stuff that cost the dealer about $200. Here is a copy of the invoice on the truck I purchased.inv.jpg

No offense, but NADA doesn't price them or sell them. The markup is the same for every dealer in the US. The only difference is the port adds or accessories installed before it reaches the dealership, have more markup than the truck. Attached is the part of my invoice that shows the costs for the port options that were installed on my truck before getting to the dealer. The predator tube steps have a 29% markup in them. Depending on how many of these options are on the truck, it can affect that 5% markup a little. NADA may be calling invoice the "true cost" and taking out holdback or advertising. That's not the factory invoice they are showing. The only other thing that can change the invoice is whether a dealer participates in an advertising co-op or not. Some will have an advertising cost built in, and some won't. Not sure if it's mandatory for all Toyota dealers. I know some Ford dealers have advertising cost in their invoice, and some don't.

At the end of the day, it's all about what you can get a dealer to do. I doubt you will find a dealer willing to sell a Tacoma below what they consider cost, which is usually the invoice cost on that piece of paper that came from Toyota. What you don't want to do is pay more than market. $500 over their invoice is a little below market, but doable on most cases I would think. Definitely on a 16.

Where in Texas are you located? I got my 2016 SR5 for 28K before TTL. Pretty damn good deal.

I'm in negotiations for a 2017 white SR5 Access Cab 4x4 V6. I'll be adding a 3" leveling kit so I can put on 33" tires. The only options is an alloy wheel upgrade. Sticker price is $34,500. The dealer has come down to $31,606 (not including lift kit). Does that seem like a fair deal? I've found most dealers are not willing to negotiate much on the price. BTW, I'm in AZ.

With a dealer you have to look at everything. Discount, lift cost, dealer adds, trade in, interest rate, any finance products they sell you. The discount sounds great, but how much are they charging for the leveling kit? Price the leveling kit at a local off road shop and see if they are close. Also make sure that MSRP is the one on the FACTORY window sticker, and does not include dealer adds like tint, nitrogen, paint sealant, etc. It sounds like a lot of brain damage. That's how dealer's make up for the guy they beats them down to no profit. There are five people behind him that will get tired of the game and just ask, how much is the payment?

The dealership deserves to make a profit. If you find a dealership that's honest with no games, let them make a reasonable profit and buy from them.

This is very true. I ended up paying $100 more for truck than I could have got across town. I just felt like this dealer was a lot more honest and up front and the other one was using pathetic sleazy tactics, so to me it was worth the money to essentially reward good behavior.

    Hey guys!
I must say that I'm glad to be back in a Tacoma after selling my 2013 TRD Sport last year.

Just wanting input on if my deal was good or not. Either way, it's a done deal and I'm super happy with my 2016 TRD Sport.

2016 Tacoma TRD Sport 4X4 DCSB
    Base Price $34,090
    Options:
    Premium & Technology Pkg W/JBL
    $3,065
    Hard Tri-Fold Tonneau Cover
    $650
    Tow Pkg
    $650
    Predator Tube Steps
    $649
All Weather Mats & Sill Protectors
    $218
    Destination & Handling Fee
    $900
    Total MSRP
    $40,222

I paid $37,800 which was the invoice plus tax, title, and $250 doc fee.

I got the last 2016 on the dealer lot and he said the 2017's are selling for 2% over invoice and the only difference is a power sliding rear window. I couldn't justify paying almost $2k for a power sliding rear window with the additional mark ups on the 2017.

Now I just need the TRD Exhaust which seems to be hard to find online. My dealer wanted $799 for the exhaust.

Overall, no regrets and I love the Silver Sky Metallic paint at night. It almost looks deep gray.

Looks like a good deal to me. Nice truck. The most important part is you love the truck.

Wow! Scooby24, you got a killer deal on your 2017 TRD Off Road! Your deal was $500 better than mine off MSRP plus you got the 2017. Congrats on a great deal. My dealer would only discount the 2017 $1000 and that's it!

Thank you, I'm quite happy! My sales associate was very easy to work with and we were able to relate to a couple of topics on the test drive. After working together for a couple of weeks following they happened to get in the exact Tacoma I wanted. We had previously agreed to invoice pricing on any Taco I wanted, but I asked him to go to bat for me with his manager and do an even 37 which was about 500 below invoice. All around great experience.

OK, this is a bit frustrating. Talking to a dealership about a 'new' 2016 TRD OR Double Cab, 4X4, Manual, Tow package and a few extra high margin things added (tips, trd filter, mats, tie downs, flaps). Invoice is $32,665 which includes a $582 TDA (advertising allotment of $582) and $940 Delivery , $32,085 without TDA.

I offered $32,750 (plus tax, doc...)

They came back with "their very bottom line" of $33,416 and $36,780 OTD ($690 of license and doc fees evidentially). I really was thinking $32,750 was a fair price for both parties.

    Thoughts?
