Triathletes BS thread

Ok so I'm starting to train for my first triathlon. Planning on doing the Bay Blast Triathlon here in SD at Fiesta Island. Any tips from experienced triathletes? Anyone else running this particular race?

I've thought about trying a triathlon, but I've been to lazy lately, and HATE anything with less than 4 wheels. I prefer 6

 

Lol yea i've always been a two wheel kinda guy... motorcycles, bicycles, prerunners, etc. haha

How's things going with you?
My Triathlon season ended earlier last month - as I only did 'closer to home' races this year. And the weather makes for a shorter season around here.
As such - I've began making my winter training plans. Including ordering a 'Wahoo Kickr' bike trainer. My current wind trainer is incredibly noisy, and terribly unrealistic. And my desire to do 2 or 3 (or more) hour indoor session is at an all time low. My best friend got a Kickr last year. And although very expensive.....it's a huge game changer for indoor training. I tried his out....and it's absolutely amazing. Closest feeling to doing an actual ride, but stationary.
It arrives tomorrow - and we already have an indoor ride planned. This Saturday we're setting up in my best friend's gym, and we're going to watch some of the IMWC.

 

It's cool to find a tri thread! I did the Augusta HIM in 2014 as my first half. Great race! I did IM Chattanooga two weeks ago but was a DNF 8 miles into the run... couldn't keep a fast enough pace on the run to make the halfway cutoff time. Those 8 miles I made it were at a snail pace haha. I hadn't put in enough hours of training. Moral of the story is you can't wing it on an IM haha. Make sure to train adequately or risk blowing a lot of money on a race. I'm signing up again for 2017. I'm determined to finish this time. I have a blast doing sprints and HIMs though!

I'm supposed to get my new Wahoo Kickr trainer today. Pretty stoked about it. And with the early (VERY) chilly weather here - it's going to be needed. I'll post some photos, if I can get it all set up later.

I have a Trek Madone 6.2. Just added clip on aero bars and a tri seat before my IM. Seat mast is flipped 180 to move me forward. I'm getting a separate tri bike for next season.

This is my Tri Bike. 2012 Kestrel 4000 Pro SL. Zipp 404's on the front - 808's on the rear (clinchers).



Here's the new Kickr. As I was getting it set up (don't mind the crazy mess in the room - lol).

 

My top photo has my old handlebar tape. I put some newer tape on a couple months ago (the photo above was from before the Calgary Ironman 70.3 - in July).
This is what it's looking like now (in its parking spot - in my gear area). I have my new Zipps put away for the off season....

 

Here it is all loaded down before the Ironman. Black bag is full of gels/bonk breakers plus all the ones taped to the frame. I really like the Speedfil. It has a camelbak style hose that runs up between the aero bars like you see on most tri bikes.

 

Here are a couple pics of my ancient 2006 Cervelo P2SL, I don't think I will sell it but I am planning on picking up a new bike, Argon 18 E-117 I think, when I get home from deployment which is soon!

How does that rear disc cover handle crosswinds?

 

Surprisingly well, the deeper front has more of an impact in crosswinds then it does. It's an older Renn disc wheel, I think the first generation, it's a bit heavy but it works and the price was right!

When I upgrade my bike, I will likely just go with a matched set of deep dish wheels, or maybe a 60/90 setup.

 

I was extremely happy with my Zipp 404/808 combo. They have the whole 'air-foil' aspect set pretty well. It's often very windy here - so my rides include heavy cross-winds. These wheels totally act like sails.....and carve out the wind - improving my speed.
I think a lot of different manufacturers have that figured out. And it can really come down to your budget - and what deals you can get. I managed to get these Zipps for a decent price, so I jumped on them. They'll likely outlast the bike (or possibly even the next one).

 

I do but only because I don't want to walk if I get flat.

I do as well. I sometimes see just as many people at the side of the road for a shorter race, as in some longer ones. Nothing worse than a race day being over. I'd rather have a bad finish time, than no finish.

Yeah Dustin. A little quiet on the IMWC chat. I went to my buddies gym, and a few of us did a spin while we watched on the big screen. It was pretty impressive. The swim times were crazy fast!!
I had it on my laptop once I got home that day. And just caught up once in a while. I did watch Jan finish.
