The Fight Club quote was from the Ford Pinto lawsuits. Subsequently the federal laws were changed giving NHTSA more power to force recalls based on risk alone. Boeing/Airbus risk assessments nowadays likewise don't factor lawsuit costs into the decision.

Well I sure hope they checked the fluid before installing a new diff. I love this truck except for the annoying noise. Im just concerned about issues down the road. Have never had a 4x4 that made that noise.

Yeah between the CPS time bomb and a questionable differential (granted nobody has posted pictures of a howling differential with noticeable damage yet), it's definitely on my mind when I'm off road away from nearby towns and out far enough on a trail that no tow truck is willing to go to....

    UPDATE

after taking my truck for a jolt related issue, they offered me platinum warranty in my truck free of charge.

While i was waiting i saw this sr5, dc,sb,v6 4x4. Lifted with nice tires but omg the sticker price was almost 42k. Whatttt 42k for a sr5 whit a cheap lift. Spacer in the front and blocks in the rear

I have documentation that my differential was replaced due to metal shavings in the fluid. It wasn't replaced due to the howl.

I wish I could have seen what yours looked like. The shop foreman said the fluid in mine looked completely normal. I believe there will always be some metal dust stuck to the magnet after break in. Huge shavings though? That I'm unsure of if that's the case.

Pretty common practice. My dealer has a few, the best is when you play stump the sales guy when you ask about the lift, they feed you bullshit and then you call them out on it.

Its case by case, really depends how your customer service rep brings it to the case manager. Being my 5th one, they claimed they wanted to keep me a loyal customer and fought for mine, 8yr/125k, keeping this truck stock and running it till 125k lol.

I do wonder if the extended warranty will force us to have service done at the dealer to maintain a proper evidence trail. I tend to like to do brakes, fluid changes, suspension, etc myself if it isn't free. I don't know how strict toyota is at avoiding honoring that extended warranty if they find out that you replaced your diff/transmission fluid yourself or did other maintenance items yourself.

Brake pads, rotors, bleeding the brake fluid for example can be damn expensive at the dealer yet only takes a couple hours at home with some beer breaks and saves you a ton of money.

I know they have to prove you caused the issue on a standard warranty, I'm not sure of the fine print on the extended warranties.

Same goes for the extended. Never had an issue with my other tacomas, I doubt they would fight you claiming you didn't change the fluid at the right time, etc. unless it was blatently evident. Now lifting the truck and changing drive angles, etc. I could see them trying there maybe to not warranty big ticket items.

Sorry I didn't read all 74 pages in this thread.

Has this issue been fixed by the dealer or is there a TSB?
If you had it fixed, what was the root cause?

My 2017 SR5 4x4 is also making this rear howling noise and the truck has less than 500 miles on it. It's just doesn't sound right for new vehicle. Should I take it to the dealer now or wait and hoping it will go away after I put some more miles on it?

Other than this rear howling issue and the misaligned bed and bumper, it runs very well and very responsive. Only had the truck for a week though.

    Thx

Is there a magnet? He said the shavings were suspended in the fluid

Usually the drain plug is magnetized to capture metal particles from the differential fluid as the system wears.

Noticed today after changing all my fluids (diffs and transfer case) that the noise was significantly reduced. I was also surprised to find no out of the ordinary shavings/metal on the rear diff magnet. I thought that would be one of the clear evidences that the rear diff is bad? I guess I'm a little confused now. Currently got 14900 miles. Filled with Valvoline Full Syn 75w-90.

I'll cross that bridge when I get to it, right now it was more important to change fluid due to a lot of water crossings I've made during this dang hurricane. Breather mod next LOL
