Tread Wear -- Too much toe in?

Just a quick question ...

I just noticed that my passenger front tire has started to wear on the outside edge of the tire. Its like a splintering/saw-tooth look. I did some googling and found that I could have too much "toe-in" on that side? I went out and looked at the front of my truck a few feet back and did notice the tire looked angled in some

Would getting an alignment fix that problem?

Did you check the inner side for wear? Does the truck pull in one direction at all? It could be under inflation if both sides are doing it. Otherwise, your alignment could be out....

 

Yeah, I checked the inner side of that tire and it seemed ok. I checked the pressures on the other tires and they were fine as well. It only seems to be wearing on the outer ends of that tire.

I'll look into having an alignment ASAP and hopefully that will help. I read somewhere else that I could have a worn bushing up there causing problems. Does that sound right?

 

How old is the tire? When was the last time you rotated the tires?

Check your balljoints.... as seen in this picture:

 

The tires are the original Rugged Trails that came with the truck in 08. I am overdue for rotating the tires .. I'd say about 5k miles ago was the last time I did it. Thanks for the visual .. I'll check those joints in the morning. What exactly should I look for?

Jack up the front end and get the front wheels off the ground. Basically, you'll wanna push on the wheel in various places (most likely, push inward at the bottom). If the wheel moves at all in an inward/outward movement - its' not good. You shouldn't have any play in it at all.
The only movement the wheel should have, is rotational.

If it does move - then you should take notice to 'where' the movement is coming from whether its the balljoints or something else. The wheel is big & heavy, so you might have to push on it pretty hard to notice the movements.

 

Creel, Are you still under warrantee?

Don't bother to check it yourself....take the truck to the dealer and have them look at it. Don't rotate the tires either....wait until after they look at it.

 

Ok I'll do that. I'm at 29360 miles right now .. is the warranty 30k or 36k? It wouldn't matter that I bought the truck used from a non Toyota dealership would it?

It shouldn't. The factory 3/36 warrantee should follow the vehicle where ever it goes until its out.

And if you have trouble getting warrantee coverage - then someone at the dealership you bought it from didn't transfer paperwork (or something).

I can't imagine Toyota would deny coverage if you bought it used while still under the 3/36.
