Honestly I don't want everyone driving a Tacoma and not too concerned if it remains a sales leader. I was pissed when another QS showed up in the neighborhood. Imagine if the only midsized truck you saw on the road was a Taco.

I'd like to see a variety of midsized trucks in the market, gives me faith the segment will continue to thrive.

    Problems with the 3rd gen-yes
Toyota is still the best option for someone who needs a new truck and needs it to last more than 10 years IMO.
If you upgrade every 5 years or so like many members of TW, it is a different ballgame.
If your truck is a utility vehicle or off road vehicle, you cannot afford to be stranded - I owned a few GM 's, and test drove a Canyon, and my gut tells me that the twins will not stand the test of time like the Tacoma.

So Ford is not going to phone in the new Ranger- let's see how that rollout goes since it will be much more complex than the last gen....

I wonder how much doom and gloom will be forecasted by those that will lay any problems on a first year rollout or be furious at Ford for using its customers as beta testers to find problems. I wonder how many will say "never buy the first year, wait til they get the bugs worked out" :goingcrazy:

You know what I mean, what many say about the current tacoma 3rd gen.

Well I had an *ummm* Prius before I bought the 3rd gen Tacoma. The Prius had no issues, but than it was built in Japan. Of course
I don't have any qualitative proof, but I think (my opinion) that Toyotas that are built in Japan and are exported are better quality than
the same one built within North America. They had a leftover limited Tacoma still on the lot and I liked the 3rd gen better. It offered more features
    that the 2nd gen.
I'd buy a German built Golf over a Mexican built Golf everyday of the week. But this is my opinion.

Buy a 4 Runner or an FJ next time if Japan built is such a priority, you can't buy a Japanese built Toyota pickup in the US, haven't been able to since the 70s and even then those trucks were pretty shitty.

Sorry, my mistake, the NUMMI plant in Fremont CA started Toyota pickup production in 1991 so anything earlier than 91 would be assembled in Japan with the exception of installing the bed. 91-95 they were built in both the US and Japan but by the time they became Tacos, they were only being built in North America.

That's more like what I was thinking, had it in my head as late 80s early 90s. I remember it was the answer to the buy American issue. Honestly sucks, I remember imports outlasting domestic and starting to feel it still rings true.

Look at the glass half full... we got the last Gen Taco with a MT!!! :burnrubber:

For those of you who bought the Auto - well shame on you ... you should have learnt from the last Gen ! I did (2012 new) Toyota trans engineers really do not have their shit together IMO. Not just with the Taco but across their line including Lexus.

IMO Japanese manufacturers have slight edge with the finer almost imperceptible details-

My wife drove a 01 Forester that has since been taken over by my son. We recently replaced an O2 sensor and later the windshield wiper linkages - whatever type of grease used on threaded fasteners made them very easy to remove- repairs on my 97 Dakota - many parts were so seized up it was repeated PB blaster followed by blow torch to free them up-really something you can't see on a new vehicle but become apparent much later on.

When that Dakota unexpectedly crapped out I needed to act fast- little time to research or read any forums - we went to the GM dealer 1st to test the Canyon- access cab 4x4 6cyl, etc and around the same price as the Tacoma, many things jumped out at me- a $32K vehicle and I needed to manually adjust the drivers and passenger side mirrors was the first shock. The transmission was excessively shifting back and forth at around 40 mph and I said to my wife- "this is not right". Repeatedly when making left turn, a warning bell that a door was open, but the doors were closed- no light on the dash about a door being open at least. It was also more noisy inside the cab when driving. We discussed this with the salesman, and he response was very slippery- all the vehicles on the showroom floor, including the Canyon had "Presidents Day Sale" cards on th e rearview mirrors. When I asked about this the response was "no discount on the Canyon, demand is bigger than supply! well isn't that nice for you.....

Next stop, Toyota- the vehicle was much more user friendly, felt more solid and engine / trans were smooth. Little things like the round heat/ac vents - how adjustable they were and beautifully designed. heated side view mirrors and the way to adjust them- just felt this was a better engineered package- time will tell but so far I know I made the right choice.

    "Let down by 3rd gen"

This is my third Taco and no, I have not been let down by any generation. My first Taco was a 1st gen with an extended cab and when the 2nd gens came out with the double cab so I snatched one up in 2007. Both were great trucks but this one tops the other two Tacos.

The character that this forum has evolved into is a puzzle. I wonder if this it isn't a Millennial generation issue? I recall somebody whining about a blinker that wasn't working but he didn't know how to check for a blown fuse. Somebody complained about the cruise control. "I hate projector headlights." And then there's guy that couldn't get his truck to run after a high-pressure engine wash-job (I tired that once on my '78 F-150.). Good grief.

Toyota hasn't let me down on any of their Tacoma's.

Yup. It was called the chicken tax. That's why there is no Ford Ranger or new Nissan Frontier as they have overseas. I'd buy a 4Runner if I could afford it, but I can't. Besides what am I going to do with a soccer mom car. haha. I did have a FJ for a while and it was perfect but I traded it in for a convertible MX5. Its a shame Toyota stopped making the FJ, but not surprised as it was a niche vehicle. Anyways, I'm real happy with my taco and I keep buying toys for it.
