I'm trying to help my friend fix his 2004 Tacoma 4x4. V6, 5 speed. It will not move when placed in Rwd/2wd. You can put it in gear and nothing happens other than a light smell of clutch burn. It appears to drive fine in 4wd hi and lo, although when in neutral, the clutch smell is still there. Thinking that the clutch was shot, which it was, most likely due to what is causing it to not move in 2wd (we never tried moving it in 4wd prior to changing the clutch), we have already replaced that and have the thing parked until we get a clue. Any tips, hints or spoon-fed answers would be great. I'd like to get this thing out of my garage so he can have fun with it and so I can work on my own crap. Thanks.

maybe the rear gears are shot and its essentially a front wheel drive vehicle now?

I spun the rear while it was jack up and free and it seemed to spin normally, no noise or anything either. Is the rear output always connected inside the trans case or is it possible for it to only power the front?

You replaced the clutch ( w/pressure plate, throw out ,etc;) Is there a pilot bushing also ? Is it missing? Believe it or not its a pretty easy thing to over look, but in any event I used to have an old (68')CJ5 & I blew a gear that probably sat on one of the internal lay shafts that slide back & forth inside the tranny that allows for forward/reverse operation. In 2h, nothing couldn't go forward or back, locked the hubs & I drove it home in 4H with only front wheel drive..... but if your smelling clutch I think your prob is somewhere in the transfer case, re trace your steps, kinda hard to form an opinion without being there to experience the condition.....

It seems like the actuator is not functioning when placed in 2h. We're going to check it out after work tomorrow on the lift. I noticed that the 4x4 light never extinguishes in addition to it not moving in 2h (which I believe it wouldn't move if the actuator was stuck in 4x4 but the transfer case was in N) If it turns out to be the actuator is not functioning we'll do the obligatory checking of the signals to it prior to replacing it since it costs nearly as much as a clutch kit. Just from spending the few hours with it doing the clutch job the truck seems like it mechanically is in pretty good shape and clean.

Anybody out there able to confirm that if the 4x4 electro-mechanical actuator was non-op and stuck in the 4x4 position, that with the trans case in N the truck wouldn't move?
