Its getting bad, Im almost broke.
For many years I sold Toyota vehicles and Honda. I truly belive Toyota builds the very best vehicles for the money on the market. Quality, superior materials, simpleness, resale value, etc. Which is why I dont understand why the navigation systems is so user unfriendly. I purchased my first new Taco 2 weeks ago. Ive wanted one ever since 1985 back to the future. :curls:The other day I was in Salt lake City, I parked and tried typing in the exact address of 2 different locations. After screwing around with the system for 5 minutes to no avail :frusty:I started to type the address in my I-phone and within 3 seconds it was ready to go. The 2nd address I typed in the restraunt in my iphone navigation and it was instant and ready. What gives? Toyota needs to get rid of 10 year old Garmin technology and offer us something a little better. Rant over:facepalm:

I agree. I usually use google maps on my phone but a couple of weeks ago, i tried to use the toyota navigation since i knew the cell signal would be spotty. It seemed to work pretty well at first but then seemed to lose the gps signal even though we had a clear view of the sky. Also, several times the maps didn't show the road even though it was a main highway and not a new road either.

I do not have a problem with it once I learned to put in the address in the right order. I just wish they were more standard. My Honda was a little different than my Chevy which is a little different than my Tacoma. I also would like an override feature so a passenger could put an address in while the vehicle is moving.

Waze is owned by Google and mostly integrated into Google Maps. Just use that

The dealer tried to talk us into the upgraded audio system with navigation when we bought our 2015. Kept saying no, but he wanted to demo it to us, it did not work, so I said show me the system I want, they did not have a truck in stock. Mystery solved. Told them I have one with life time maps and if it dies, only $120 to replace it, How much to fix the indash system? Oh, it is under warranty for two years... Thanks but no thanks.

No, I prefer using Waze separately. AFAIK there is still a delay of the information migrating from Waze -> Google Maps.

Also as of not too long ago the Police Ahead feature hasn't been ported over to Google Maps. Which is one of the best features of Waze.

I'm still surprised at the simplicity of the nav in most of the newer vehicles. It can't be that hard to introduce an android like system that would allow you to download your own apps. Then again.... nobody would be using factory applications

That's why everyone goes crazy over Android Auto and Apple Car Play. Because you can basically use your phone and the screen in the vehicle becomes an extension. So like you said it took you 3 seconds to do in your phone, well that's the advantage of having one of those systems.

That said I find the system pretty good and definitely much faster to type in than my last car (a Ford), I love that it eliminates characters immediately instead of thinking for a few seconds each time. For me it's plenty good.

On my drive from Georgia to NJ the navigation stopped working. I was just outside of Washington DC, according to the navi, for the entire 3 hours home from there. Wasn't until I shut the truck off and back on that it came back. Granted I was on I-95, I can navigate my way home without the navigation from DC...still...had I not been familiar with the area, it would have left me stranded. I just stick to google maps on my phone. Would be awesome to see some of these manufacturers incorporate Google maps into the navigation systems.

Once in awhile I have an issue with the route it gives me. A couple weeks ago I was leaving out of Yosemite NP and it gave me directions to a route I thought was questionable but was told it's the fasted route. Against my better judgement I took it and I regret that decision. Took me way out of the way and through some heavy back country roads and interesting neighborhoods. I now only use it when I am out of cell signal and still double check the route before committing.

I drove from O.C. to Las Vegas to get my tacoma with nav. they couldnt get one down here. after a week or so I came to the conclusion IT SUCKS> so not user friendly. I had Garmin on my last Tacoma. will sell this one and replace with a Kenwood some day. I will pull over and use my phone before I try using this out dated garbage.

That's been a problem with every factory nav I've ever had.

I typically don't use them for routing or finding POIs, more I use inbuilt nav for situational awareness of the streets and alternates as well as for traffic information during my normal around town driving. The latter wouldn't be of much relevance in many places, but in Atlanta it can be very helpful.

I really would prefer CarPlay capability, something the GM twins offer. I chose the Tacoma for reasons other than the head unit.

It isn't the best. I'm dissapointed in it and I resort to using my phone most of the time.

THREE times, out of the minimal times i have used it, I have had it tell me to take the wrong freeway at a junction. Well, the voice says one freeway and the indicator says the other.

I've had the experience of it not adjusting the route properly if I go off route in a known area (say to avoid a toll road). It was dead set, no matter how close I was getting to my destination, on having me turn around and go way back to follow the original route.

It hasn't been able to find addresses multiple times that my phone has.

I really want to turn off the voice sometimes, and i have not figured out how yet. I don't need to know every 5 seconds if there is slow traffic 15 minutes ahead on the route. I get it, I don't have a choice anyways, tell me once and it's fine.

I had the experience one member reported here of it stop working while I was driving. The location indicator got stuck pointing one direction but the map kept moving. Next thing I know I look over and I'm in the ocean, so far into the ocean I guess that it adjusted my time zone as well. Didnt fix itself until I restarted the truck a few hours later and started driving again.

At least it isn't a huge hassle to use my phone, I just wish they offered a way to override the screen with Google maps on my phone.

You went from big oak flat to old coulterville - through foresta - and into el portal - coming down from crane flat. That's the quickest and best route... and you have a Tacoma. GPS constantly sends people through there... For years. Those roads ain't bad when there's no snow!
