So pissed at Yamaha right now.

Was doing my first oil change. Finished draining and installing a new filter, so I went to replace the oil drain bolt. Hand tightened it, then decided that this time I would do it right and torque it to the correct specs, which is 31 ft-lbs. Thought that seemed high, but started tightening. I stopped and loosened it slightly because it seemed like I was tightening too much. Sure enough, the oil pan threads completely stripped out.... Even cracked the pan next to where the threads are.

Looked it up and apparently the issue is all over the forums. They overtorque them from the factory, and 31 ft-lbs is apparently too much for it.
So now I get to call a company in the morning and see if they have oil pans and gaskets in stock and get it next day shipped...

Not even a week old and less than 500 miles and I'm having to replace parts on the motor :frusty:

Please burry your torque wrench and give that shit up already! Its only hurting you!

So long as you don't pull a @Sacrifice and completely fail to tighten it at all, you'll be fine.

"Good enough" is good enough when it comes to these things.

Also, your luck is kind of like my luck with a new bike

Just keep a level head and get it fixed. Nothing to lose sleep over.

Yeah, the ONE time I use my torque wrench for basic maintenance. Tighten by feel from here on out and EVERYTHING haha

Yeah, I'm worried nobody will have the parts in stock and I won't have parts until next week. Guess I'll go ahead and take off the current pan to get myself as far ahead as possible.

Don't let anything rust or get dirt in it. I'd leave the motor open as short of time as i possibly could

Paper towel taped around it and I'll be fine. No moisture out here in the desert to produce rust.

    :luvya:

That sucks Brent. Like Ive said I only use a torque wrench when doing motors. The YZ call for 91ft-lbs on the rear axle (aka stupid ridiculous amount of torque) so I don't do it.

Yeah, at least it's something relatively easy to replace I guess. I hope Yamaha was smart and used a gasket that's easy to install...

So partzilla (the company I ordered my oil pan and gasket from) told me my parts wouldn't ship until Friday. But, my order status already has a tracking number and it says it will be here tomorrow by 3:00. I really hope so, but I'm skeptical :fingerscrossed:

They are very fast with getting parts out, usually within 3-5 days

Yeah, but I ordered Tuesday and it shipped out Wednesday even though they told me they had to order it from a Yamaha parts factory first. That's why I'm surprised.

They told me the same thing when I ordered factory parts, strange but fast

Oil pan and gasket were waiting for me when I got home from work.

Got the oil pan installed no problem and filled it up. No leaks.

Re-installing the exhaust took the longest time. The copper washers behind each header pipe are nearly impossible to get to stay on the exhaust ports long enough to get the header installed. Had to do some acrobatic moves with my hands and a screwdriver to get everything lined up. Not looking forward to when the time comes to install an aftermarket exhaust...

So, first oil change finally accomplished at 438 miles.

Yeah, but I wasn't going to replace them just for the stock exhaust. New ones wouldn't have made it any easier, they would have been even thicker in fact, making it even worse haha

    Oh, and 766 miles now.

I mean, you aren't supposed to reuse them because they can fail.

I only know this from restoring CB750 hondas

Sweet dude! If you havent checked it out yet, http://www.fz07r.com/

One of the local guys to me started building and racing the FZ 07's against SV's in the LIghtweight racing classes. They look badass.

Eh, so far so good. As long as it lasts another month or two.
I've seen pics of those all over the place. Very unique!

Gave the bike it's first wash. The wheels were a pain to clean just like everybody said haha but when they're finally clean

    20161010_143954.jpg

Then both the bikes had to sit outside for a bit while I finally started organizing the garage.
