Mine will grab ever once in a while. It happens only if I maybe slowed way down and was creeping along and then accelerated. It only has happened a few time.

My '10 5spd 2nd gear does grab a little when cold. It is hard to shift when cold anyway, so I find myself clutch in and hold pressure on the stick and a second or two later it will sorta glide into gear with little effort instead of shifting. It ususally grinds a tad if i force it. It doesnt like shifting at 2500 rpm and tends to be smoother if i take it to 3k rpm just for shifting to second gear(doesn't grab). Its a truck trans so I chalk it up to that.

It takes more time, but the rest of gears on up are ok. I have 4500 miles on it go im sure its still breaking in some. Want to change to redline oil at 10k down the road.

So you just mean it's hard to shift into 2nd?

I changed out the gear oil in my tranny for Redline NS and it helped a ton.

I assume the original poster has a manual transmission since that what it says in his profile. That TSB is for the Automatic Transmissions on the 4.0L V6s.

    That is true.

He said he had a 5-speed transmission in the post. Does Toyota make a 5-speed manual transmission?

The MTs on the 2.7L are 5 speed

The MTs on the 4.0L are 6 speed

Yes hard to shift to second and even first especially after my URD short shifter install.

I believe the manual trans for our trucks use brass synchros and a GL-4 spec oil is less harsh on them then a GL-5 oil.....the 75W-90 NS is a GL-5 oil more for copper and other harder metals so you may want to check that out....don't hold me to it though.

Redline MT-90 and MTL are GL-4

mine goes into second smother than any car i've ever owned....don't force it into second..don't think of shifting as one motion...like 1st to 2nd....it's more of a two step process with a very slight pause in the middle...also make sure you are pulling the gear shift straight down and not towards your leg

yes any 75w-90 syn should make things smoother its the detergents in the GL-5 oils that are just harsher on the synchros in these trans over time from what i have read. The issue isn't with the viscosity but the cleaning or additive agents used in Gl-5 as opposed to the Gl-4.

I believe Gl-5 NS should be good for everything else provided you are a 2009 + and require no limited slip additives for your rear. Check the truck manual and you can always email redline to confirm specs. Lots of good info to search on this and other forums about this.

Okay, did EVEN MORE research specific to our trucks and here's what I came up with. A page straight from the Owners manual saying it's okay to use GL-4 or GL-5 in the manual trannys.

Still, thanks for the info. I had no idea it would matter at all. Still going to do some more research though.

Hi tig1 calling-sorry I wasn't clear on my post( it was my first one).it is a five speed manual ,it doesn't matter on what the temp is. it only does it from first to second and not third to second.I have been to the dealer more than once,I am at the point of asking for a letter to protect myself in the event the gear goes an they try to blame me.an yes if I shift from first to second with that pause in the middle of the shift it slides in smooth.it does do it at various rpms, most times it is good at around 2500 rpms. thanks to all that responded.

    later tig1:D

That was the same problem I had before changing gear oils.

The syncros in our trucks are wierd. In the mean time, have you tried double clutching?

From first to second this is how it goes:
    1) push in clutch
    2) shift to neutral
    3) let out clutch
    4) push in clutch
    5) shift to 2nd
