Strange Electrical Issue

    Hello all!

    I was blowing out my sprinklers today, the outlet my compressor was plugged into in the garage went out from the compressor i am guessing pulling to much power. The strange part is both of my bathrooms have no power now as well.

    I cannot find any tripped breakers or gfci outlets, i flipped the main off and back on as well, still no power in the bathrooms.

    Any thoughts on what i should look at next or what could have happened?

    Hmm... no gfi outlets?.. is there one in the backyard/kitchen? That might be where the trip is.. alot of houses..including my own..use the garbage disposal one as the trip point..

    Other than that.. you could have burned the outlet junction box up if you had a crappy connection..and the increased current draw from your compressor finally fried it. The junction box will usually be in the attic in a single story home.. in a multi story.. it's in the ceiling somewhere:/ to find that out... ur gonna have to shut off the power..and take resistance readings on the outlets..phase to ground..and intentotally grounding out the power side..then reading the breaker output side to ground in the panel.. that will tell u if the circuit is "open" or just "degraded"

    Do you have a multimeter? (A real one..not a crappie voltage test pen or outlet plug)

    That is one thing on my list is to install more gfi outlets in the house. the only one is in one of the bathrooms. I have a cheap voltage meter but given this situation im going to buy a new one. I still need to check the attic for any possible gfi or a junction box. Any recommendations on good meter? Thanks!

    U also mentioned the GFI in the bathroom.. that GFI could be shot.. open the outlet up and read incoming power.. if it's got 115-120.. it's the gfi.. I've seen them go bad

    BTW that meter DOES have a back-lit screen.... if that matters.. (which it definitely does..dark...sun glare..etc)

    Sometimes when breakers trip, the switch doesn't get pushed all the way down to the obvious off position and can look like it's still good. By flipping each one you reset the one that tripped.

    Especially obvious on a 3 phase system (shipboard)... the 3 breakers are ganged together by a metal bar... 1 phase can be tripped with the other 2 fine...and the whole thing will look good.

    Snugtop cab high canopy.
    I had a 20 amp compressor on a 20 amp circuit however most switches and outlets are only rated 15 amps. I had an outlet and a switch fail and replaced them with 20 amp parts, no more problems.

    sometimes a breaker trips without looking like its tripped. I'd try to find out which one runs your bathrooms if they arent marked correctly. Makes it easier next time.

    Some breakers are hard to tell if tripped. Turn off, then on to reset. Pushmatic - you will need a test light, or just cycle each one.. you'll get a feel for a tripped one quickly. The flag indicators may, may not be visible or accurate.
