hi all,, I have a chance to get a basically new looking used softopper for a long bed for around $300-400. the only thing is its off an earlier gen (2) i think, he says the bed 72''long and about 61''wide.... and i have a 2016 long bed. does any one know if the fitment will be ok or will it be 300 down the drain.. thanks

What i would do is on monday call the manufacturer and ask them over the phone

The Softopper itself will fit. The distance from the top of the bed rail to the clear rail is 1" more on the 3rd gen. That may keep the clamps from working but I'd have to keep my Softopper to know for sure.

I just mounted my Softopper from the 2010 OR on the 2017 Pro and I got to give it to the engineers as it fits just fine. The bolts on the clamps are prob 4" long and easily accommodate the extra height. Also the top edge of the tailgate went from about 2" wide to about 5" and while the rear window panel doesn't drape over as far, it covers just enough to keep the rain out.

    Picture?

That's the only part of the Softopper I'm not completely satisfied. I think the front where it matches to the cab looks crappy. My Softopper is for a 2nd gen on a 2nd gen and it still looks strange. Otherwise, it the best thing I've done to my truck.

Here is a picture of how it looks on a 3gen, the gap between the rear window and the softopper is a lotScreenshot_20161009-075416.jpg and here is a picturw of how it looks on my truck, still a gap but not as much and i think "flows" better with the truck IMG_20160704_065250.jpg
I might just get a tonneau cover when i get my 3gen, now that im selling the softopper i realized i barely used it

thanks for all the info guys.. I really didn't think the shape of the rear cab was changed at all? any one have more or better pictures of cab to softopper area or any pic for that matter. I have wanted a softopper for the truck the day I got It, but worry when I here some of the dislikes on here.

One of the brands has a 2016 specific model and it looks fine.

I don't have any pictures at this angle with it on my 2010 so hard to compare but yea...the front lip sticks up about an inch, maybe 1.5" above the cab on the 17. Would prob be less noticeable if I was running a roof rack. I don't have any pictures at this angle with it on my 2010 so hard to compare.

yes it sits a little higher on the new ones, i work at the toyota dealership and put my softopper from my 2gen on the new truck to see how it would look on the one i ordered, i didnt like the window/softopper gap and sticks up a little over the roof line thats why i sold mine, it was a perfect match on my 2gen sorry i dont have a close picture like that.
it is a great product. im just about the function and form lol but unfortunately didnt meet my requirements. plus i think the 3gen looks better with an open bed or a hard tonneau cover.

If I was to buy a new softtopper from the website would that be the same as the 2nd gen, or has the front been modified slightly for the 3rd gens?

i assume it will be the same as the 2nd gen they dont have any information for the 3gen on their website, if they modify one to fit the 3gen a little better i wouldn't hesitate to buy a new one.

I just got off the phone with them and the 2016/2017 softopper models for the 3rd Gen tacos have a shorter frame/canvas, and a modified back panel. So you do get a more streamlined profile with the latest version. The website is vehicle year specific when ordering.
