Congratulations again Mike that had to be a great feeling.

Day one of vacation was spent repairing all the little things that fell off the truck this weekend, nothing major, the truck has a rattle behind the dash that I can't figure out.

Tomorrow, I go take care of Mom

    Evening Everyone

Just about an hour ago i found out from friends there's yet another Brush fire burning in the Cajon Pass . The fire is up at the top of the pass near Oak hill and and in the center divider . Last reports has it at 3 acres but the Santa Ana winds are blowing and humidity is 15 %

It is unreal on the amount of brush fires that have burned thru the Cajon pass just in the last 4 months , This makes 5 brush fires to date up there

Again Congrats Mike on the win and the awesome race weekend you and your team had

Bi-weekly staff meeting in less than 1 hour. I look forward to them (being over) Gonna take the bull by the horns on this one and be in full blow bitch mode when it's my turn to talk. Maybe everyone will just leave me alone after that.

Going home today and start phase 1 of CB radio install in the Tacoma. It's antenna day! Gotta have it up and running before we go to Black Mountain in just a little over a week. New Fire Stik antenna, new Cobra radio, even bought a new SWR meter. (someone "borrowed" my old one and never returned it.)

    Morning all
I got a 25W ham radio and stay in the gmrs band, where I have a license, the clarity and distance are amazing and no one else is on the channel. For under 100 bucks it was well worth getting rid of the cb.

I have gmrs with my garmin rino handhelds. My youngest son when he was younger always seemed to have a hard time in the mountains getting turned around and the rino's worked great for locating him, up to a point anyhow.

Each year when I am in Superior National Forrest I keep telling myself next year I will have a ham radio. The Forrest Service uses them and even the Air National Guard that flies\trains over the area. It is one of the few Military Operating Areas (MOA) in CONUS that they can break the sound barrier and often do, it is that remote. CB's and even gmrs are pretty much worthless because there just isn't anyone to pick you up. Even the ham isn't effective without hitting a repeater most of the time. Still looking into it and researching best options just need to buckle down and focus on it. Someday... But it is not an area you want to get stuck in or lost. More than one person has disappeared there and being in the iron range compasses can be iffy. It is far enough North even a GPS can be confused. My Garmin Alpha has GLONASS capability and the Russian Sats help a lot in the far North. Unfortunately the Alpha works on the same frequency as the Canadian emergency bands and your unit will be bricked if you go over the border even by mistake.

Maybe not by coincident the area we pheasant hunt in SD on the ND border is also a MOA where the sound barrier is often broken. Not a lot of people there either however phez hunting in the Dakotas is much more a social event. Someone is always nearby and will find you. Can see a long ways on the prairie compared to the boreal forest.

A walkie talkie is a much easier install.
    Just saying...

We have a group of 7 on the way to Black Mountain on the 21 22 and 23. The other 6 all have CB's. Just not me.....My wife bought a CB, Antenna, etc.....So now I'm sorta obligated to put it in the truck. Hand held CB's are worthless without an outside antenna..... Time to bite the bullet.

If your traveling with a herd of others than a hand held is fine IMO. The A pillar mod mount works well for that and allows your antenna decent reception. But if you want to extend range it is easy enough to use a roof top mag mount antenna and run the cable inside the window and to the handheld. It is exactly what I do with my Garmin Alpha for the dog. Standard 13" attached whip is good for a mile to a mile and a half. With mag mount on the roof I can get 6 plus miles if I need it. Of course this is for tracking the dog, not voice comms but same physical laws apply.

In fact the whole mount can be pulled and replaced to OEM in less than a minute, which I will do once hunting season is over.

father in law gave me the radio i have been thinking about getting an adapter for an external antannae and a power cord. i have a little radioshack cb that i put together with an external speaker thats meant to go in and out of the vehicle as a temporary travel radio coupled with a mag mount anatnnae i was going to hard wire it into the truck but the only time i'd use it would be for trail riding so was hoping a hand held would be an easier solution
