886s the only option?

    Hi All,

Ready to order the All-Pro bumper and was wondering what my options are for the front suspension.

Currently I have the 885 OME springs with OME N140s shocks. I hear the 885s will sag with the added weight to the front.

I appreciate the current ride quality and understand the 886s (though will support the added weight from the bumper) will be a stiffer ride. Are there other options with the current shocks I have? Or would I need buy coils or new shock/spring setup?

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Best Regards,

    Kris

Yes, they are a stiffer spring, but the weight from the bumper will help reduce a fair amount of the extra spring resistance.

Time to invest in some coilovers.

He already has- His 885 COILS are OVER his shocks.

You just need the 886 coils to combat sag. If you aren't worried about a little droop-Don't worry about swapping. The springs will ride differently but with the weight change- You may not notice anything.

I know he does but if he does get 886's he would have to swap the 885's out. I say keep the 885's for now...live with the droop and since they will sag n e ways...save up for coilovers for the near future.

My point was he has coilovers. I assume you are suggesting "adjustable" coilovers...but the 885 springs going over the shocks makes the OME lift a coilover set up.

And it's only slightly more work to replace the springs and keep the same parts over wise...and FAR cheaper.

Yup. Coilovers come on stock tacomas.

Yes 'adjustable' coilovers like ICON, Sway, Camburg and etc...and it is more expensive and costly but it eliminates the sag of extra weight added and gravity over time.

X2! OME's are the best bang for you buck.

Yes, the 886's are going to be a stiffer ride until you install the front bumper. Then it should be near the same as the 885's.
And I think if you keep the 885's, then you're ride quality might suffer because the springs weren't designed to bear the extra weight in the front.
I don't know for sure, but I know you should upgrade. But realize you have time to save up for the new 886's by wearing out the 885's.

the only reason they do this is because of the spring rate. I think fox and toytech's are around 750#. Well thats what the 886's are, so it's the same thing. just without the "adjustability" part.

    Edit: The 886's are 660#.

I'm speaking form experience here, I have the all pro front bumper and 886 coils. The ride is good, but if I had it all to do over again I would have gotten the 885 coils. The bumper doesn't weigh anywhere near the ARB bumper so the spring rate IMHO is too high for the lighter All Pro bumper.

I have taken my rig off roading and it handles great, but the down travel is severely limited for some reason. It could be the shock or UCA's I'm using, but I feel that if I had the 885 it wouldn't be so high a lift and I would have better articulation in the front end.

I'm thinking I may have to get the larger Uni-Ball UCA's or some extended travel shocks.

I'm not saying my setup is right or perfect, but my experience is when I go over a large bump I get a loud thud sound when my wheels travel downward.

In addition- That adjustable thing only goes so far...All springs sag no matter what. You can only adjust up so much before you run out of threads or run out of travel.
And the 886s compensate for the weight just fine.

Look at Mas post above me- I didn't even really think about the weight difference between All Pro and the ARB....Might be ok to try with the 885s and see what happens.

I have the 886's now, and I like them but I just don't want to be limited so much on my down travel. My UCA's are at about the end of their travel, so I think they may be hitting the springs when I go over a large bump and making the sound. I'm wondering if the TC or Camburg UCA's with the 1.25 uni-ball would be better for down travel than the 1" ones I have now.

Plus I'm not sure if it hurts me that that I'm still running the 5100 in front with the 886 on them.

I have the 5100 set at 0 and I bought some used Camburg 1" uni-ball UCA's. I can't think of anything else causing it to hit. When I go over a speed bump at speed, I hear a loud clunk from the front coils. It was never there when I had my previous set up.

You have OME shocks so I am sure the 886's would ride nice since they are properly valved for those springs.

Okay thanks I couldn't remember. having one of those days...
and Listen to Silverback, he knows alot!

And I got to ride in his truck before he got the fox coilovers, and it rode amazing offroad and onroad. riding with him pretty much sealed the deal on getting OME's rather than the billie's.

    Toyota's are awesome

CORRECTION: Toytec uses a 600# coil for the Tacoma's
and the 886 are not 750 either, try 660#

    Big difference.
