I guess we just have to settle on the fact that to get the superior truck, we need a crappy nav.

The navigation has pretty much been spot on perfect for me. I had one time where the gps glitched out (said I was in a different state lol), but that's it. It's easy to use and has been perfectly accurate for me. And that includes a 2k mile road trip.

In fact, I've found this to be the easiest GPS I've ever used in terms of the desired location being entered/found.

I've been a Garmin fan for a long time. When I upgraded from Gen 2 to Gen 3 this summer, I was toying with continuing to run my Garmin on the windshield. Having used my Taco's system for a couple thousand miles, I'm okay with it. (Much better BTW than my wife's Honda.)

I was a bit frustrated with it at first since I couldn't monkey with it while driving, but yesterday I started using the voice commands and it worked fine. And maybe that typing and driving isn't a great thing anyway. Especially for an old fart.

One of my first upgrades will be a new head unit. My wife's Civic has Android Auto and it's a joy to use. Everything just works.

It really is not that long ago that there was no other choice . What maybe 10 to 15 years ? You could get a membership with AAA or know somebody with one and get a page by page map book. It worked for me . I still have maps in my traveling vehicle .

My brother upgraded his Garmin GPS and I salvaged the cast off one, works fine. None of this can't use it while the car is moving (I never do I stop but the passenger can use it).

You guys have no idea what "sucky navigation" is. Tacoma's navigation is awesome, maps are up to date, the UI is simple and predictable. The "safety" limitations are annoying, but not specifically Toyota's fault. Learn to use technology, noobs.

While your comments have merit, @0210 , and I agree with your first three sentences, I can also see where people would be frustrated. CarPlay is a nice solution which I've used in rental cars. Discrete GPS devices get free lifetime map updates, don't lock out the user when moving, and often have really good interfaces.

The downside of course is CarPlay requires plugging in your phone to use it. I don't think there's any wireless CarPlay on the market yet, but maybe someone's got it in production.

With discrete GPS units you have the higher risk of theft. You're either risking your windows or you're constantly taking it down and putting it back up. Sometimes even when you take it down and lock it in the glove box someone smashes your window and steals it. (I'm speaking from direct experience here...)

Yeah, I'm just not much into calling others names when we're all supposed to be helping one another. Even in jest. Particularly in the current political climate.
(yes, I know you're kidding, but still wanted to share my thought)

I have never met an auto manufactured nav system that was as good or better than what Google has to offer. That includes the luxury brands too. BUT I will say I have been very impressed with the rural road coverage in the system (navigation to 13,000 feet via rough 4x4 only road). I have been in backwoods nowhere and found trails and even gotten navigation to where I needed to go. Google was not an option due to no cell coverage. I consider it my backup for when I cant use Google. Anyone been able to beat the safety features like if your moving at all you cannot enter any information? I occasionally have a passenger that can do the navigation stuff for me, crazy I know.

Excellent point about cell tower coverage. It's been long enough that I forgot what a pain it was traveling cross country and not being able to make a call at all times . I have 100's of miles of gravel / forest roads where I am and they show up on the built in nav. even if they are overgrown .There is no phone service .
I guess if you stay in the big city all the time the phone gps would be fine . The nav in the truck works for me and there is no monthly bill .

Clazzio leather seat covers, CBI T3 front, SOS sliders, SCS Ray10s, 285/75/16 Duratracs, debadged, extra bed D-ring tiedowns, Advantage TorzaTop, OEM bed mat, custom center console organizer, Husky liners, remote start.
I have used the voice search function while driving a few times and has worked quite well to get me to my intended destination. I am happy with the hands free functionality as an alternative to having get out and "illegally" use my phone while in route. My biggest grip is how it says to go straight at like every exit even though I am supposed to stay on the same road for like 100 miles.
