All these low housing prices always tempt me, but then I remember that when I was looking at living in places like Texas, South Carolina, and a few of the flyover states, I realized that while my rent/mortgage would be cut in half vs Northern California, my salary would be cut in half (or more) as well. It was all relative for me.

I love Northern California. I'm a couple hours from the ocean, an hour from Lake Tahoe, a few hours from San Francisco, and I'm in the woods.

My mortgages (2), car payments (2), electricity and everything but food and entertainment account for 40% of my monthly paycheck after taxes. And then there is my wife's income, who working for the feds makes a bit more than I. We actually looked at moving to cali as her fed job would allow that, but even after the location adjustment in pay it was crazy. I like living in AZ for the cost of living and nice winter weather. Skiing (flagstaff) is a couple hours away and the sandy beaches of MX are 4 hours away. I much rather live in comfort and put in a lot of money for retirement, savings and most importantly travel. Like the Kenyan safari in March. Just saying...

Hey, if you can pull that off there, more power to you! I've been offered work in AZ (Scottsdale), and the salary combined with the cost of living didn't add up vs. staying where I was born and raised, so it was a no-brainer for me.

In my line of work, I'm right where I need to be. I have one mortgage, no car payments, and the usual bills, and it accounts for maybe 30% of my take home at the end of every month.

Buddy from Toronto....you gotta move up north man!
I'm 3 hours north of TO...Mortage is 1200 for 1400sq ft, 60x120 lot. Im sure lot and house like this would go for 1million in toronto. and they'd tear down the house! lol

Agreed, but as I get older the renting gets old. Northern California is the best though, I am from Southern California and unless all you do is lay on the beach or surf it doesn't compare.

Thats exactly what we are in the process of preparing for. Selling this house, moving into the mountains and buying a house for half the price. Buying a TRDOR and a travel trailer and taking a month per summer touring the USA.

As they said in the Oldsmobile commercials, this (3rd gen) is not your father's Toyota.

I agree right now the wife and I go out to eat and fast food is like 21 bucks for 2 meals its nuts. you can almost go to chili's for the same price. If the people at McDonalds want to make more money leave that job for the high school kids and get a better job. I cant just bitch that I dont make enough money and get the wonderful state of CA to raise my pay. Dumb.

Compared to most of the US....yes.
On the flip side the housing market in Houston, where I live close to, I live out by NASA, has always been pretty flat, meaning very slow increase in value for homes.
Mine is a spec home, customized, single story, 2,920 sq. Ft., bought new in 2004 for $165K.
    Today's value ~$210,000.

Just after I graduated San Jose State, the 1BD/1BA 600s.f. apartment my wife and I moved out of went up to $2100/month. Granted, we were on the edge of Willow Glenn (ritzy area) where the homes a half block away were starting at $1.3m, but $2100 was not only CHEAP, but cheap for the South Bay! I don't even want to know what the same apartment in the heart of SF would go for now.

I worked at Facebook for a few years, and all of the tech companies have exploded recently, so you get all these computer engineers making [easily] $120k/year moving into the surrounding areas and the real estate prices start skyrocketing!

....on the flip side, a lot of areas (like Oakland, Alameda, and San Leandro) are starting to clean up for the exact same reason....

I got you beat. $2150 for a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, no garage apt in Alexandria...and that is the cheapest deal in the area.
