2low mod push button 4wd

Don't use electrical tape. It turns into a sticky mess and eventually leaks. Use shrink tube, or 3-M Scotch 2228 rubber mastic electrical tape. It seals moisture out.

 

I did mine last year when I first got this truck. I like it a lot...means I can drive on people lawns in low range (to keep from spinning out/tearing up the turf) when dumping mulch into gardens but I still have the freedom of 2wd.

what does that button do different? i have an 01 tacoma trd 4x4 but i dont have that button. my damn sister has a 99 runner with that button haha

 

Nothing really we just push a button to go into 4hi and you guys shift.

I did this mod a while ago and it works as suggested. It is nice to have more options.

I would like to add that at times, when going from 2lo to 2hi I get a little bit of grinding when I pull the lever back. I never did this before the mod. Maybe its just me, or maybe I'm not waiting long enough after stopping to shift.

 

My 96 with push button 4x4 doesnt have this blue connected but a white one in the same place. Unconnecting it has done nothing. Any ideas?

 

Does anyone know what wires these are that we are disconnecting on the wiring diagram when disconnecting the blue plug for the 2lo mod? (edit: I verified that those disconnect the l4 detection sw).

Would like to understand all the possible implications of the mod. It seems to me that it is removing the l4 detection sw thus the 4wd ecu's l4 input 18 will never be signaled (desired), it seems it would then also affect the abs and the engine ecu (shift points for an auto transmission?), and never allow rear diff to be locked(it is confirmed that grey wire mod must be done to use the locker).

So the question is why not just cut the L4 wire directly at the 4WD ECU (pin 18 Green wire)?

(on another note. I assume for the grey wire mod that allows for locking the diff in any configuration is cutting out of the circuit, then grounding the box label 4wd: "rear diff, lock ecu"?)

 

Ancient thread revival, but need a confirmation. So this mod is basically just disabling the ADD actuator from automatically getting actuated when the shifter is put into 4 low correct? So the front drive shaft will still spin, the main R/P in the front diff will spin, but since it's an open diff the energy is lost on the passenger side (ADD tube side), right?

I was considering doing this mod to get 2 low for some yard stuff because my spiders are blown in my front diff, but it sounds like if it's spinning the gears inside anyway it won't let me accomplish what I am wanting to.

 

well if you cant use 4x4 anyways then just unplug the transfercase actuator for now.

 

Did this mod last night and saw the add actuator didn't engage. Saw two plugs going to the actuator on the t case, not sure which to unplug.

 

The add doesn't engage till the t case is engaged. Theres a sensor on the top that lets it know. Just unplug the motor.

 

Get manual hubs

 

expensive. especially compared to a free mod. plus i happen to like my push button add.


it would be sweet if these trucks had electronically activated hubs like polaris had on their atvs. best of both worlds then.

There are two plugs going to the actuator though, I am assuming the bigger plug? And this shouldn't have any negative effects, correct?

 

Also manual hubs wouldn't help me in this situation.
