Can anyone give me some direction?

My 95 was bucking hard on my way to an interview so I pulled off on a side road and it stalled out. The engine light would come on and go off while it was bucking.

It started up for a minute but now is dead again. The check engine light is on without my keys in, but goes off if I crank the engine.

I borrowed an OBDII scanner but it needs a laptop to run, and I don't have that. I'm thinking to run over to harbor fright to get a scanner..

I had what seemed like a random misfire the other day, but other than that the truck has been fine.

Have about 200 miles on this tank of gas so I'm assuming it's not bad gas? Thought I head the fuel pump working when I turned the ignition on.

Should I go buy a scanner? Does the check engine light normally stay lit without keys in the ignition?

If you had a random misfire the light would flash but when it ended you would have no light. If you had old plugs in my experience these trucks throw a P420 emissions code before it got to the point where it misfires at least my 02 has. But that would still be my first place to check.

A plug wire or fuelfilter/pump issue could act up that quick and suddenly disappear. At work the Ford explorers we have do this kind of shit like it's their job. I don't even stop anymore when the light begins to flash at me. Lay off the throttle for 10-15 seconds wait for the light to stop then hammer down again.

I put in plugs and wires about 4 months ago, forgot to mention that.

Last few maintenance items were oil and driveshaft lube just the other day

    Thanks Jason for fixing that.

When they ran this sale last year I bought 4 of them. 2 small and 2 XL cases. I have used them a few times this year most recently to the Maine trip. I love them. I also used them for our PA trip and they were so much better than regular luggage for the rain. Close the lid and everything stays nice and dry (we keep them outside underneath the tent section of our camper). The XL cases even have wheels on them so they are easy to wheel them around.

Get a scanner. The bucking and flashing engine light leads me to believe it is a misfire. Check ignition wires. When were plugs done last? Was it raining/wet when this happened?

    Thanks, Chris
Thanks! I should have done the same. I debated that this morning. When my alarm went off at 4:30, I was not having any part of it.

Yeah, slight exaggeration... It's about a 10 minute drive but it's just take a left out of my driveway, drive for 10 minutes then take a left on Rt 1 and I'm there.

Unless the Patriots are playing, and then you're roughly 3.926 hours of driving away.

I don't go anywhere near the stadium when the Pat's are playing. That being said, even with a Pat's game, I bet I can get to the stadium in under an hour from my house.

Gather 'round everyone, I'd like to tell you a story of how I learned that I'm an idiot.

I got a call from Kevin at BlueSea about my "defective" ML-ACR that I had emailed them about. I mentioned in the email that I was using it on a Tacoma. Well, When I got a call from Kevin the first thing he asked is where I'm grounding the ML-ACR. I told him how I had originally grounded it to the chasis, but per their troubleshooting guide had moved the ground to directly on the negative terminal of the battery. Kevin said great! That was usually the rookie mistake. However, they underestimated my stupiditiy.

Next Kevin mentioned that it was strange to see a 24volt Tacoma... I had to interrupt him and clarify that I was running a 12 volt tacoma that was mostly stock still. He paused and said "Oh... Well why did you buy the 24 volt ML-ACR then?"...

Well shit Kevin, I don't know. It's probably a combination of how I can't read and how much of an idiot I am.

Luckily all is well and I won't get charged anything extra in the end, but damn I felt stupid. I sidestepped the rookie mistake just to make the highschool freshman mistake. :facepalm:New 12volt ML-ACR will be here tomorrow.

Gave the cap to the pop-up camper a little sprucing up before winter. Used Flex Seal Liquid. To literally give the top a rubberized coating. Sealed all the little cracks and chipped areas with this coats first then layered it up. Hopefully do another coat tomorrow too to make it a little thicker. Keeps a nice glossy coat too.

I borrowed a scan tool which I'm am a bit skeptical of because it was a challenge to get it to connect, then had no codes to produce. It's an AutoTap.

I re seated some of the plug wires and it's running now. Strange, I have been running these wired for about 4 months now... they must've come loose?

It's back at the house now but I'm weary of driving it around

Don't know if I like the Cabela's/Bass Pro deal.
The nearest Cabela's is in East hartford , an hours drive for me ,while the Bass Pro in Bilgeport is about 10 mins. from where I sit.
I've dealt with Cabela's for well over 30 years and like/use a lot of their products.
Bass Pro, otoh, not so much. Their Red Head brand, I find ,is cheesy cheap. Bought a pair of bow hunting gloves that split after the first time wearing them. Returned them and bought Under Armor instead.
I'm kind of glad I burned up around 300 bucks of Cabela's points last month.

IDK about man enough to admit it. I just really don't have a sense of shame haha

In other news I sold my subwoofers! Now I can measure to see if two of these Pioneers will fit in the AC on the floor behind the seats. If so I can order those and use the same amp, then build a platform above them even with those little cubbies. Then I'll have all the storage space! Woo!

Maybe wires. New doesn't mean good. I've had brand new wires fail a few times.
For shits and grins, wait till it gets dark out, fire up the engine and spray the wires with water from a spray mister. Don't need much. You'll see some arcing if the voltage is blowing by the insulation.
