OBA -> On Board Air Mega Thread & BS

Lots of fantastic ideas and installs in this thread. I just figured I'd add mine. Being basically "cheap" as I can be.. Years ago when I wanted OBA for my Jeep I bought an MV50 and a discounted/cheap Ryobi compressor for $50 on sale at my local hardware. I found all the parts I wanted on the compressor, regulator,shut off, blow out pin, 1.5 gal tank etc. All I had to do was swap out the compressor for the MV50 and quickly and easily and cheaply I had OBA. figured I'd share..

 

New addition to the oba setup. Can watch locker psi and supply psi on one gauge.

 

Locker PSI seems a little high. I've heard that around 85 is ideal.

 

Yea, book says 85-105. My old ass regulator gauge is at 95, digital say 100.

 

I notice you guys use a different variety of tank sizes.

2 - gallon
3 - gallon
1.5 - gallon
5 - gallon

are you guys happy with tank size with respect to filling tires and running air tools?

 

I'm using the main tube of one of my sliders as an air tank. My calculations have it at 1.3 gallons.

Not enough air to do anything with, and is annoying to fill when you want to use a locker. First tire airs up slightly quicker. If I weren't running an air locker, I would consider a larger tank.

 

so that eliminates the 1.5 gallon for meeh

 

I use a 1 gallon tank. It gives a quick burst from 20 - 30 lbs, then all compressor from there, but it refills quickly while moving from tire to tire.

 

My small tank(I don't recall size) works fine for locker. Air it up and compressor doesn't run all weekend.

 

So I think im going to pull the trigger on an OBA setup. I believe I'm already halfway there - Figure I get some critiques from you guys:

I already have a compressor installed for my rear locker -



The compressor and the small tank already have a pressure switch, which is the one that came with the ARB compressor:



It is rated at shutting off at 145 PSI - which is okay with me.

Since I already have that pressure switch, I wouldn't NOT this puppy:



I only plan to run a hose from a spare port on the ARB compressor 'mini - tank' using ARB air line hose and fittings I have laying around to a via air 2.5 gallon tank.

Is this thought process sound?

Would there be an issue with me using the ARB pressure switch VS the pressure switch from VIAIR?

 

This puppy is not a pressure switch. Just an air valve. You're toggle switch opens and closes the valve.

The pressure switch is the piece on the left with 2 spade connectors.

 

ARBs are built in I believe. Having two would be pointless. you wont need the viair one. but using that solenoid(the arb air valve) might be useful. You could turn off/on the air two the tank with a switch. That makes me think. I might have two re do my pumping this way. but back to you. your pumping for the tank make sure to put a relief valve on it as well as a drain.

That hose is too small to fill up your tank. I believe the port on that mini tank where the pressure switch is is 1/4" NPT. So get a T and go off that. I'm running 3/8" OD air line and PTC fitting I bought off Amazon and have had good luck with them.

Yes @Sandman614 you are correct, the pressure switch is the piece on the far left with the spade connectors. Would that suffice for my setup?

 

I have an extra port that is not being used on the little tank, can I just come out of there with a 3/8" OD air line?

 

The air locker ports are 1/8" BSP fittings. I wouldn't use them.

 

Nothing wrong with BSP threads. The 1/8" fitting though will just be a bottle neck. 3/8" line is not gonna do any better of a job @ramonortiz55

Looks like ill be adding a brass tee into my cart and do this:

The tee will have the pressure switch and the airline to the tank.
