Black full replacement emblem kit. Interest?

I may be able to have someone come up with a CAD design template to apply however that would increase price significantly. The best option is place a painter tape underneath the current badges and on the sides as a reference point. Remove old emblem with a heat gun or hair dryer and use a solvent to remove any remaining adhesive from the old emblems off the paint. Then simply reapply the new ones using the tape lines as reference.

As for the quality, they will be a molded material. I haven't get the exact info on the material yet. They may slightly fade in the sun with years of exposure. Shouldn't be any ghosting from the old emblems since they will be the exact same size and I doubt anyone has faded paint on their 3rd gen yet

 

Just wanted to keep you updated. I changed the design into a full complete kit. My first post was edited and contains the info of the full kit. It would be a 7 piece kit with a new replacement grill emblem

 

Unfortunately probably not. It would be more work and money to include it in the kit and not everyone may want it. The kit is going to be a universal Tacoma kit covering SR, SR5, Sport and OR models. Not every emblem will be used for each vehicle as it is. I'm sure some people won't be happy about that but it's the only way to produce them as a kit cost effectively. The molds are expensive so to produce a bunch of different emblems or different sets per model or truck options, it would increase the price of each kit substantially.

 

Where did you get your emblems? Are they full replacements, painted or layovers? If I can produce these I'm sure someone who buys a kit with a 4 cylinder and doesn't need the V6 badge could sell it. Or I maybe be able to break up a few kits to sell individually to people who only need certain ones. That may be an option

 

I would be interested, depending on price. I am really only interested in the side tacomas and the front emblem. I was just going to remove the V6 from the back and leave that clean.

 

I'd try to keep cost as low as possible. Especially for TW members. However there is a lot of upfront cost. Thats why im trying to gauge interests before I agree with the manufacture to have them produced. The molds are expensive to make and have to be done prior to manufacturing obviously. I finally got rough measurements and will be sending them in to get an actual price quote. I'm hoping to offer TW members or a group buy with a possible 10-20% discount. That's great savings. I'm not trying to get rich off this. Just trying to make a little bit of money to compensate the time and work I have already put in. Plus to my knowledge no one makes full replacement black emblems for the 3rd gen Tacoma. Plastidip make be fine for some but others want a permanent and more professional solution.

Definitely. Molds cost a bunch to make whether you're running ten units or ten thousand units.

Just a thought... is this something that could reasonably be done via 3d printer via Shapeways? That's not something I know much about so maybe it's not likely to be feasible.

 

Yes unfortunately I'll have to offer a complete kit because of the molds. If I had separate molds made for each emblem I could sell them separately, however the price would be a lot higher because of the mold cost. Sell as a set enables me to reach out to more potential buyers and keep the full kit prices lower. Not everyone will end up using all the badges in the kit depending on the model and features of their truck. Also some like yourself may only want the front Toyota emblem and Tacoma ones. Unfortunately there isn't really anything I could do about that

 

Im unsure. I don't know much about manufacturing or 3D printing. Being 3D printed they may look very cheap and plastic. Also I don't know how that would hold up to the UV. It would probably fade a lot more. Also would have to have another manufacture make adhesion tape for them as well. All in all I don't think it would be much cheaper. Just wouldn't have the mold cost, but I would be concerned about the quality

 

I was more stating this because there was someone looking specifically for the V6, which is one out of a package I wouldn't need. However it all depends on what the price ends up being after the molds and the quantity are determined.

 

It will be a complete kit like the image posted in my first post. You would simply not use the emblems you don't have or don't want to replace. Unfortunately without making a bunch of molds which would cost a lot more and raise the price of the emblems, and needing to order 2-4 times the amount, this is the most effective way to manufacture these

 

Yes. People could always sell the emblems they don't want or need. I may even be able to break a few sets up depending who would need what

 

It's pretty easy man you just have to trust yourself. Especially easy with newer vehicles. Take a heat gun to badges, take them off with fishing line-get scum and goo off with product of your choice, dry, (small coat of polish if wanted), and then you can still sorta see where old emblems were, take a level along with the new emblem and just go for it I guesss. you think its going to be risky but its easy to get right. youtube.

 

You won't see any ghosting on a 2017.

 

A tape line before hand will work wonders. Like you said, it's not really hard to do. If you super anal you could make some type of template or take a bunch of measurements before hand. I think the tape trick will be more than efficient enough to get it pretty accurate.

I wouldn't recommend using a polish as that may not allow the new adhesive to bond securely. Just remove old emblem with a hair dryer or heat gun. You may not even need to hear it up depending on the outside temp. Fishing line will help remove but you would also pull off with your hand or non marring pry tool. Although fishing line will be safer especially for someone who may not know what they are doing. If hate to see someone damage any paint. Clean all the old adhesive off with a prep solvent and use some isopropyl alcohol to degrease and clean surface. Then reapply the new emblem.

 

If I were doing it, I'd use some automotive masking tape around the existing emblems - top, bottom, sides. Straight-edge / level against bottom of current emblems and mark a line on the tape on each side. Same for the leading edge. Then remove the existing emblems, clean things up, apply the new emblems to the alignment marks on the tape.

BTW, I'm a bit anal about such things and this is probably overkill. Though I have learned not to straighten pictures hanging on the wall as I walk by them. In other people's homes. At least not while they're looking.

Unless the cost is too high, this is a great idea. Second gens are so much more common than third gens, maybe that is a better place to start though.
