Installed 4.88 Gears in my 2016

What rear end does the OP have the 8" or the 8.75" with manual tranny??

 

With that calculater, if I wanted to go 75mph, with 33s and and 4.88 gearing, the RPM's will be turning at 3700. That is freakishly high.

 

Just kind of curious here and because I'm fairly new to the tacoma scene... Would I benefit from waiting till my warranty runs out before doing this? Could this be done in a home garage? and if I decided to pay for install, what should I be looking at paying?

***SIDE NOTE: Ive worked on cars since I learned how to drive. Suspension, audio, engine internals, turbo kit and nitrous installs, etc.. But I have never installed gears on a truck before.

 

I thought the same thing.. maybe hang onto that warranty, then switch it out.

 

That calculator doesn't account for the overdrive gears.

Gears; 5th or 6th.
That calculator is equivalent to driving in 4th gear.

 

Yup, you're right.

3.909 gears with 265/70/16 tires will be 1742 RPM in 6th gear at 70 mph
4.88 gears with 285/70/17 tires will be 2035 RPM in 6th at 70 mph
4.30 gears with 285/70/17 tires will be 1793 RPM in 6th at 70 mph.

Kinda makes me think about pulling gears from a manual transmission truck to use with the auto

and just want to confirm your MPG didn't take much of a hit after regearing?
I thought a 4.56 would be a better ratio when considering what factory is. Others are saying its a bit too much torque that it makes braking a bit of a bitch. Any reviews on that?

Using that calculator and gears shown for 6 speed manual, I definitely can wait for 4.56s to come out, 4.88s change the rpms a bit too much, I prefer a stock gearing feel. C'mon Nitro release some 4.56s!

 

It's not particularly complicated, I've installed a 2wd rear set, not a 4wd, but the biggest key is getting the mesh/backlash set right. I didn't get it quite right and they whined a bit for as long as I owned the truck. Having said that, I drove it another 90,000 miles without issue, but if you knew what to listen for, you could always hear them.

If you are mechanical, which it sounds, I wouldn't rule out doing the job yourself if you enjoy these type of projects. Lower gears are by far the biggest kick in the pants improvement you can make, and despite my not quite perfect install I loved them every time I drove that truck.

I am seriously planning to do the 4.88's on my current truck once I make sure the drivetrain is solid on my particular truck.

Well according to nitro! To whom I'm one of the largest Toyota gear distributors for nitro world wider. For right now there are no plans for the 4.56. Due to the feedback they have on the 4.88s . I can say that it may play out like the tundra 10.5 where plenty have requested other ratios and requests have fell on deaf ears. I've been trying to get 5.10s or similar go running 39s on my tundra and have 100s of emails for 4.56 but since 2008 nothing has come about. Hell even have BJ Baldwin and Ivan Stewart trucks running 4.88s and requesting more options .

I do a lot of builds for Toyota Corp and have helped with BJ Baldwin's trucks as him and Ivan are good friends and fellow racers of mine . Bj is faster though! Haha

 

Maybe we could convince Yukon to make a 4.56 set
