Hey! First post here, I'll be posting more in the future with more questions and maybe help after I get a little more familiar with a taco. I'll just get right to it, I bought a 1995 tacoma 4x4 automatic with what I assumed was probably just a blown head gasket, cylinder #1 was full of water/antifreeze and the engine is locked up tight, I've yet to determine if the ring is stuck or if its a bearing but none the less I'm done on the hunt for a new engine. I'm going to have the head checked out and if it's bad then I probably won't even try to rebuild this one... the thing is the 3rz engines are really high and I've not had much luck finding one close to home but the 2rz on the other hand is a lot cheaper and I've found one only about 30 miles from home. So will it work with minimal parts swapping? I work at my dad's auto repair business so the work isn't the issue I just want this thing back on the road as fast and cheap as possible, it's just going to be a little run around/work truck I'm not looking for performance I could care less that it's a little less hp... thanks for any help!

the 2rz-fe is for 2x4 tacos. I don't know if it can work with a 4x4. It will fit, for sure, but you'll probably have to say goodbye to your truck's 4x4 capabilities.

Also, it's a 4 cylinder, like the 3rz-fe, but as I said, it is designed for 2x4 tacomas, not 4x4

Just curious but why would you think I would have to give up 4x4? It has a manual t-case shifter, from what I've read I would have to use the 3rz oil pan but that's no big deal...

well, I might be wrong, since I've never really looked into this subject because my engine is fine :D

Anyway, the 2rz is less powerful than the 3rz, so you might lack power for the 4x4, this is why I said maybe you'll have to give up the 4x4

though, thinking about it, I've heard of people putting a 2rz in older 4x4 22re toyota trucks.... so it could work

No. Just 2 different engines. That's like saying the 3vz has 3 cylinders and the 5vz has 5 cylinders.

you really wouldn't want to do this. Just spend the money to repair the 3RZ or find a used one, if you can't maybe look into the 5vz or something cool like a 4BD. If you're intent on it yeah it should work but you'll need different ecu and probably some parts swapping, and the truck will be slow as shit, which it already is with the 3RZ

I've also found a 5vz local and cheap but if I have to buy a lot of stuff to make it work then it's not worth it...

I'm sure there's i4 to v6 swap threads here somewhere, I'd have to look around.

Ecu, various harnesses, the engine itself, other miscellaneous parts - look for a donor truck. As far as cost wise it's going to vary.

And I believe the fuel tanks are different sizes? It's going to be a project OP but it's doable and has been done before. And it'll be worth it.

Looks like I'm going to be better off to stick with the 2.7... when looking online some are vin U and some are vin M, anyone know the difference? Mine is vin U...

Also has anyone ever dealt with a company called "ALL JAPANESE AUTO DISMANTLING" in Los Angeles? Its shows they have remains with a 6 month warranty for $1,250
