3.90s in auto 4.30s in manual.
The gears are in the rear end and front axles.
Your drive shaft will turn 3.9 turns per one turn of the wheel. Changing gears to 488s
Will make your driveshaft turn 4.88 turns per one turn of the wheel. Making more torque and your engine revving a little higher about 400 rpm's.
Changing your gears will give you more power in the low end rpm range.
Most guys change gears when they had bigger tires or tow a lot of heavy weight.

The amount of parts. The Master kit include new bearings , Which normally for newer trucks under 10k isnt really needed! Most the time anyway!

    Speedo does change!
Well its to many a difficult task. Id recommend having a professional install
No it doesn't mess with the sensors or the abilities

For a few that doubt and for the others that have questions. Here is a shot from my drive home. The picture shows my RPM around 1700 @60mph . This is on a slightly up hill trip home. So on flat I'd say rpm would be a bit lower. Again this helped tremendously with the Hunting for gears. I would have posted higher speeds but my exit was coming fast when I figured it was a good idea to take a picture to share.

Mpg needs to be calculated for how much the speedo changed. That amount is reading high because the truck thinks it is going farther. Its reverse from the % calculation you do when you get larger tires.

I have the hypetech speedo re calibrated and verified with GPS so it is truly 60 MPH! But i didn't even notice the MPG IM showing the RPM vs Speed part more than the MPG rating

Calculator puts you at 1,772 rpm @ 60 mph in 6th...
You had it re-calibrated or confirmed with a Hypertech?
I thought it was unnecessary; as the speed sensors are in the wheels.

It is crazy the gearing and drive ratios that got put on the 16 autos. I would say 4.88 is required for you guys to be similar to the manual transmission ratios.

To contrast your photo above, I run at 2000 rpms with 265 75s in 6th gear I'm the mt.

Just to be clear for the newbies.

Gearing doesn't make more anything, torque or HP, related to engine output.

Gears don't change the RPM power band of the engine.

Gears just make the engine rev faster, getting into the power band quicker, changing driveability.

Gears are an offset to restore driveability when the 'effective gearing' has been compromised by jumbo tires.

ok so why are gears so expensive. When I had my 12 Mustang GT a set of Ford gears and they are good parts was $150 and an install kit was like $99 why are gears for these trucks almost 10x the cost? Its not like they are being hammered with 400,500, even 600hp drag racing. I cant see how they can cost what they do

Supply and demand? Something tells me there are tons of companies building gear sets for Ford rearends.

Notice the overdrive gears (5th and 6th) when comparing mt and at... 6th gear in the mt is a tad lower than 5th gear in the at ....then take into consideration the differential is also a lower ratio (4.3) in the mt.

4.88's in the at is most likely going to equate to similar rpms the mt will have in 5th and 6th overdrive gears at any given mph.

A big question will be if the at with 4.88's will be able to tow in 5th. Will it be able to hold rpm's at 65mph in 5th while towing (reasonable weight)...4th gear (1to1)could be rendered too low with 4.88's unless you want to cruise 65 mph turning 3400rpm or so.

the Ford ones were the only ones people wanted. the 3rd party ones also seem to be inferior. I just cant see it being worth that kind of money for what it is. Now if those prices included install still thats over priced. Most rep places I was looking to get a gear swap was charging about $500 for the swap.

For what it is worth, both of my Jeeps I had re-geared were both somewhere between $1,200 and $1,800 installed. Typically a fair price is about $300 per axle for install (this is in DFW area). Luckily this time around on the Tacoma I will be near my brothers shop so he will be able to do the install and I won't have to fork out $600ish for install on top of the gear kit.

    Nope.

The only measure for torque or HP at the rear wheels is engine based less driveline loss.

Gearing does not impact driveline loss. Torque and HP measure the same at the rear wheels for a given point in the RPM curve.
