I agree with this to a t. I tend to overrev a bit on hills to avoid stalling because the catch point range is so small.

all other gears just fine on mine, have heard others report on the same 1st to 2nd gear shift too.... my dad had a gen 2 2.7 and also had the same rough shift.. Hill assist? you mean it feel like brake stays on for a couple seconds when you release it??? -mine does that.

I found the shift from 1st to 2nd can be rough if you don't get the RPM's high enough in 1st gear. I realize there is no gas savings here and it would be ideal to shift quicker, but try revving it out to 3k in first and then slow shift to second and see if it improves.

Yes, it's not even a couple of seconds for me. Definitely less than a second ... almost seems like a waste of a feature unless it's adjustable (which I have not looked into yet). I'd like to disable it, if possible. Maybe it is a few seconds, and being preoccupied with the small grab point is just adding to it.

Just like TRDPro4x4 says, I'm also over-revving it to compensate for the weirdness.

will try... what seems to work for me, get up to like 2500 rpms, push clutch in slower, let rpms come down a little more, then push clutch all the way in, it is USUALLY smooth as butter that way.. when im in traffic and got people on my ass it is hard to do this technique....

I dont mind the feature at all, i think it does help on inclines for sure. I thought there was something wrong with my brakes at first when I went to buy my truck. Good to know it is a feature of the truck..

I like the hill assist on my TDI Jetta much better. You can floor it, and it simply hangs at 2k rpm's until you get it going. Helpful for beginners, but not noticeable to skilled drivers.

That was another clutch that was tough to get used to, because it has an auto shut off if you dip below a certain RPM ... say 6-700 or so (just below idle). I suppose the idea for that is to save on clutch wear in a stall situation.

I find it very difficult to teach people in that car, because newbs tend to let the clutch out too quickly ... which in the Jetta it will stall from even the slightest bog no matter how much throttle is applied.

Yet, if you give it just a hair of throttle to start on a 15% grade ... it'll crawl right up no problem just as long at the clutch is let out slowly. Try telling that to a person who stalled the vehicle with a half throttle on a flat surface, and they tend to look at you with those judgy "you're a terrible teacher" eyes.

Thanks for that , I'm in the same boat trying to find a similar or lighter Combo with a better tire. Do you know of the weights of just the tire and just the wheel alone ? Weighted separate. I'm waiting for my 2.7 auto to arrive and what to change tires right away.
    Thanks

Fingers crossed my 2017 SR AC 2.7 4x4 auto comes in today! Wanted the 2.7 from the get go. What's the deal with cruise control and mileage? I regularly do 1000 mile drives and will be hoping for good mpg on cc...

I haven't looked at the AT gearing, but I'll assume it's different than my MT. With that said, take this FWIW ...

My commute to work is 134 miles round trip (120 of which are hwy), and this tank I am using cruise as much as possible, so I will report back once I add the next fuel up to fuelly. My first tank was 95% hwy, didn't use cruise control much at all (only for learning the functionality of the switch). I drove 65-80 mph, had quite a few spirited accelerations, drove however I wanted really ... and got 24.2mpg.

On a different fill I hauled some firewood, did more around town driving over the weekend and got 22.6mpg.

Right now I'm 150 miles into this past fill up, and not yet at 3/4 tank ... so I'm hoping to get 25+. My best tank on my '94 is 25.9mpg, will be thrilled to get close to it.

Haven't really checked mileage yet, but I do have the auto with the 2.7 and just used cruise for the first extended period of time last weekend and noticed it tends to hang around 2500-3000 rpm's. If I'm not on cruise it shifts up and rpm drops down to 1500-2000.

I live in Florida so mostly flat land, but slight hills or overpass's it seems to downshift considerably more than necessary to get over the hill and sticks in that gear for a while (I'm guessing this is corrected with the tranny TSB) I assume cruise would definitely impact mileage, but not sure by how much. Can try to calculate it next time. Congrats on the truck btw, the 2.7 and access cab make a great pair!

believe 4.10 gears in AT. 3.90 gears in our MT's

this is true. However the Overdrive gear on the new 6 speed auto is much taller than 5th gear on the manual if I remember correctly.

Interesting stuff, thanks guys. I would have gone MT but I wasn't about to force my wife to learn, and maybe I'm a sucker but I like the 6th gear.

Perhaps in the mountains I will use "manual shift mode" or whatever the heck it's called to shift up and drop rpms...

I also weighed the stock 2016, 16" TRD OR wheel, and it came in at 29lbs, almost the same as the steel 16".

I can't speak for the 3rd gen 2.7, but I had a first gen 2.7 5 speed, 4x4, xtra cab and it was a great truck. 245,000 miles and only tires and breaks were done. But here's what I can tell you. I had that first gen for 5 years and I never saw any better then 22 mpg. And it was kinda slow. Not terrible, but it wasn't a rocket. So far with my 3rd gen 3.5, at, trdor, dclb, 4x4 I average 23 mpg doing the same type of driving. And I have 100 more horsepower on tap. And I'm in a truck that weighs almost 1000 lbs more. So I can tell you this, the 2.7 will most likely be a longer lasting and less maintenance engine. But the 3.5 is better on mpgs at least in my experience.
