hypermiling???

so i was reading a thread over at TN where some guy suggest turning off the engine to a stop to save gas... now to me that just sounds really really dumb and dangerous cuz you lose power steering and the brakes go to shit... why would someone do this just to add a few mpgs, but this guy is claiming 32 mpg!!

 

Its dumb and dangerous. As I said in that thread, its good those idiots are saving money because if one of them hits me, they are gonna need $$ for hospital bills. I hate stupidity.

 

ahahahaha yea when i read that i started to laugh...that guy is trying so hard to make a good point about it but no one is listening

 

I know I have steadily gotten 19-21 mpg in the city with keeping my tach at 2000.

 

you won't be saving money when you have to buy a new starter every year

 

yea thats exactly what i was thinking. its gotta take toll after doing it over and over, it will eventually catch up on u... im happy with my 22mpg

They interviewed the owner of the hypermilling web site here on one of our talk/news stations. I have to say the guy is an idiot. He was advocating driving 55 in the lane over from the slow lane on freeways here that have a limit of 65 and everyone does 70. His basic response was it's the other guys problem if I want to do 55. Ok granted the truck speed limit out here in California is 55 but they stay in the far right hand lane. I'll give and say that the ideas of driving with less than a lead foot are good but most of the other stuff he advocates is sheer crap!

 

The guy is a moron.

 

I saw the SUV in front of me in a JAck in the box car lane turn off and restart his engine twice within like 2 minutes time. I thought the same thing, you idiot, that early starter repair is gonna cost you way more than those few drops of gasoline you "think" you are saving. Not to mention the extra battery drain and extra charging to charge it back up.

I know in Japan they turn off their engines at each stop. Does anyone know of any research on the logevity of their vehicle starters?

To those that are inconvenienced by "hypermilers": Leave earlier for work. I am more iritated by those that inconvenience me or risk my health and safety because they are in such a hurry and/or impatient. Rush-rush-rush as if what they have to do is more important than anyone else (yes, I'm sure you are late for your brain surgery rotation).

 

Think of the wear & tear on the starter. I would never turn off the ignition. Dangerous ,stupid, & illegal.

I have been doing mini-hyper miling, by putting it in neutral on hills. It has helped some. Instead of coasting down a hill at 2K rpm with the engine doing the braking; 900 rpm coasting. Even slight grades it works. But I don't do it until the vehicle is almost at a stop. If I slow down to the speed limit, back in gear I go. The guys in the article were too extreme. They impede traffic & don't care.

Especially silly to do with a truck. This was never and economy car.

You can gain good mileage, as I do, by driving steadily on the freeway, and not doing jack rabbit starts and stops.

This way, you maximize the mileage for whatever vehicle you drive, from economy, to our trucks, to the Kenworth Tractor trailer.

This is the way you do your part, and have the vehicle you want and/or need. This is America, and it's not a requirement to own a economy car, nor is it illegal to own our trucks.

 

That is why shouldn't use the drive thru. Those lazy bastards! Get out of your vehicle & go in.

 

I've noticed I have been paying more attention to my tach lately.
Easing from stop signs & lights now, instead of gunning it.

I sure miss those days when you get beside a car that thinks he will blow your ass away. Because you are in a truck. I'm sure I have shocked the hell out of a few people. I had one guy at a light inching forward, reving his engine. At the next light (when he caught up), as he pulled up beside me. He didn't do it again. lol

 

I am kind of surpised that the auto industry hasn't adopted the methods gas Golf Carts use. I would think they could somehow make it work for automobiles. Push on the gas pedel and the motor starts to run. Let go of the pedel and the engine stops running. that would save a ton of gas nation wide.

 

I just posted in another thread about a similar topic. I thought that keeping the car in gear (even downshifting) and allowing the engine to maintain your speed going down a hill didn't use gas. (And saved your brake pads from excessive ware.) Yes, the RPMs are 2k or so, but that only means that the engine is turning at that speed... you're not pushing gasoline into the cylinders b/c your foot is off of the gas pedal. The engine is moving, but not burning a lot of gas. Right?

Again, like I said in the other post, I don't know enough to know if this is true, but it's what I've heard.
