    Absolutely correct. It needs a seasoned hand.

    We have a long time shop around here that specializes in differentials & axles. Every thing from stock to heavily modified drag cars. They shorten axles, spline axles, set up gear sets, etc. Those are the kind of guys I'd be looking for.

    We'll have to ask @Aussiek2000, but I'm not sure dealerships actually have a differenital specialist on staff anymore. Back in the day, my father in law was the one for Pontiac. I assisted him in setting up a few, like changing a Judge from a stock 4.33 to a 4.76 Zoom, but I'd never attempt such a thing on my own.

    Ok, I am really considering this due to the truck seeming very sluggish. If I put 4.88 gears on it, it would rev higher and faster and not shift out as much?? This is very confusing. Also, would it void any of my warranties to switch gears?

    We honestly don't do very many diffs. Maybe 3-4 a year at most. I just rebuilt one last week. We Don't have a "specialist" per se. But there are guys who are better at that type of work than others.

    If anyone has a manual trans TRDOR and has plans to regear, please PM me. I'd be interested in trading you front diffs and rear center sections plus cash on my end. My parts have 7k on them and have had redline gear oil since 3k. Would allow me to run 4.30's and give you the parts to swap to 4.88's.

    Basic overland stuff...
    Someone help me out. By my calculations I'm seeing the following.

    Running the numbers and going from Stock Auto w 3.90's to 4.88's I'm seeing the following:

    1. Assuming stock tires and just going to 4.88's will cause the speedometer to be off 20%. It will actually be going 20% slower than the readout. I.e. 65mph on the gauge will actually be 52mph.

    2. Take into account I'm running 34's that really measure 32.5-33 I can deduct about 8% of that back out.

    Bottom line with no reprogramming my speedometer is going to now be reading 12% fast. I.e. 65mph on the gauge will really be 57mph in really life.

    Obviously going to a 35 or 36 would help that but that's not in the plan for the near future.

    Has anyone out there swapped the 4.30's from a manual over? I haven't looked into it yet. 4.30's in my setup would pretty much put it back into a stock configuration.

    That sound right?

    I'd like to. But just the front gears are over $700. That doesn't include bearings, races, shims, and all the rear parts.
