Correct. I very specifically read the T&C. I have to keep records to show that scheduled maintenance was performed as required. Which is something I already do anyway.

Also, it's written on Fidelity, which backs pretty much any of the extended warranties written in SouthEast Toyota territory -- they're both owned by the same family if I recall correctly.

I hope that's how that works for you, my Uncle bought a Camry and I think he said he even has to buy his tires from that dealer for his lifetime warranty to remain valid.

No such exclusion in the policy I have. Great example of why it's necessary to read and understand the fine print.

Especially on stuff you get for free.

I'm sure they don't pay much for these. First of all it's non-transferrable; only valid for the original owner. Then it doesn't kick in until original 5/60 powertrain warranty expires. I'd imagine the proportion of buyers who buy a brand new car and keep it 6+ years is relatively low. I'd bet that most of the policies never get used at all.

Anytime a dealer works on a Toyota, the data is uploaded into the corporates database. Toyota knows exactly when things break and what the problems are. With that, they put together the extended warranty and they know how much money they will make off of them.

It's like playing the slots. The house wins unless you get lucky (or unlucky).

    SB

p.s. Take a hard look at the extended warranty. Is it it Toyota's or a third parties?

I bet it's easier to successfully make a claim if you have been having it dealer maintained. I'm really skeptical of the integrity of insurance companies. Just a disclaimer, I have no experience on this topic.

I can certainly imagine a service writer being more likely to go to bat for you on something marginal if you've been regularly using that service writer and dealer. Most of the big stuff on a powertrain warranty is going to be pretty cut and dry though in my experience. Within our family we've had a 4runner until 170,000 miles and a Camry until 240,000 miles.

Yep. I'd be leary of any third party other than FWS, who is so tied at the hip with SET that it's unlikely they'll go anywhere.

SET is SouthEast Toyota Distributors, who is the intermediary between Toyota and all Toyota dealers in Georgia, Florida, Alabama, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Fidelity Warranty Services provides warranty and financing, and both are part of JM Family Enterprises. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Moran_(automotive)

    I got gold 48 months 140 000km
Originally wasn't going to get it, but figured with some of the current issues with the taco, I'd rather have it incase any issue on the trucks isn't worked out within the first 60k km

@FX Jenkins - You should be able to buy one at any time up until your original 3/36k runs out.

I haven't ruled out buying one, but will wait a couple years to see what sort of track record we're seeing. I'm not a big fan of extended warranties, but sometimes they can make sense.

Tell me that's *beyond* the factory 36 months... i.e. a total of 7 years from in-service date. (is the 140k km total or above the 60k km?)

    no.

    factory here is 3 years 60 000km.
    I went for 4 years 140 000km.

    I'll likely hit 140k in 2 1/2 years.
I only got it for km. I'll hit 60 000km in just over a year.

    ya man.
For my line of work I don't know where I'll be working
I was lucky enough to be on a jobsite that was 8km from my house for 8 months, so didn't have any milage. But after that job I was sent to a site that was 140km each way for 11 months.
Spent 2 years at a job that was 30km each way so that wasn't bad. But it seems like all the work that is close by is drying up so seems like I'll be going back to long drives. So figured I should get a warranty that will last a little longer.

    Eww. That sucks.

Down here you have the full term of the original warranty. https://www.toyotafinancial.com/pub...e_protection_plans/vehicle_service_agreements

And if the job situation can be variable, there's something to be said for buying a warranty while you're "rich" to cover in case of a problem when you're "poor"...

Someone once said "In times of plenty, buy long magazine subscriptions."

    yep.
But that's just what it says on there...wouldn't doubt if you went in and asked they'd probably sell it lol.
Especially if they had all service records and found that your car was in good order, they'll extend it just to make some money.

Perhaps, so long as the purchase date was within bounds and you didn't have any service records showing a greater than 36k mileage.
