They did the TSB, then a couple weeks later I was in for service and said it was shifting bad after the TSB, so they kept it for a few days while my rear springs were being replaced, manually check it, and it was 2 quarts low. Didn't help though, but so far, as long as I let it warm up for a minute or two it won't do it. The real test will be when it gets really cold out.

6K or so. To be honest, a quart or so isn't that bad in the scheme of things. This fluid expands like crazy, it just needs to warm up.

I hope things work out Ok for ya. I don't know what 6000 mi would do with a tranny 2 qts. low... maybe Gearchrucher could chime in with some advice, but I'd think it wouls have done some damage...
    Good luck, friend

Mine does it too... Every single time after cold start. Had the TSB done at 300 miles... Currently have 5,800 miles. Glad it's not just me.

I did think it was 2nd - 3rd, but I could be wrong. Watched your video, and does it right at the same place; right before 30 mph.

Min was 0.75 low when I had it manually checked a 500 mi. I am only now experiencing the flare when cold (8500 miles).

Transmission TSB was not designed to cure the shift flare, I don't know why people keep thinking it should.

My understanding is the transmission flare is due to a leak down of fluid when the transmission cools due to improper sealing of valves. As the fluid heats and expands, the valves seal better and the flare disappears. In order to correct this condition an aftermarket kit was developed for the 5 speed transmissions in the 2nd gen Taco but a kit for the 6 speed hasn't been released.

So you should get your fluid checked to ensure its the proper level and you can have them try the TSB to correct the software shift points, cruise control shiftiness and R-D delay but a software patch will not correct a mechanical problem if fluid leak down is the cause of the flare.

Mine does this almost every morning and sometimes after work. I got the TSB done about 6 months ago, have about 7k miles on the truck. Happens between 3-4, upshifts for a split second and then it's ok. Another Toyota fail :frusty:

It's actually Aisin, the transmission manufacturer that supplies the 5 and 6 speed transmissions that have the leak down problem.

Were they the ones that picked to put them in the Tacomas?

Flare is symptomatic on many autos, not just those supplied to Toyota.

I didn't say that it was. I was just asking if they made the decision to put them in the new Tacomas? Or if that was Toyotas decision. Because if it was Toyota, then it still seems like a fail to me if there is a problem of a flare with these transmissions, yet Toyota still wanted to go with them. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Is the flare causing transmission failure or is it just an annoyance to you? Like I said it was also a symptom in the 2nd gen and I haven't heard of it being the source of catastrophic failures.

If you don't like the symptom then have the rebuild kit installed to correct it. My guess if it doesn't appear to shorten the life of the transmission, Toyota isn't going to worry about it if the symptom clears up when the truck comes to operating temperature.

I'm no pro in this, so I honestly have no idea what it's doing to the transmission. It just doesn't seem normal to me.

I didn't know about a rebuild kit to correct it, what's that?

You can start here to learn about the different symptoms and likely causes including the 3-4 shift flare when cold.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...omatic-in-the-2016-write-up-with-pics.361114/

Sonnax makes a kit for the 5 speed in the 2nd gen as listed in the thread I linked but not one for the 6 speed yet.

I get the flare hot or cold, doesn't matter. Had TSB and had tranny filled.
