I was brought up Catholic as well, church every sunday and CCD every week. I remember the first time I seriously questioned the church, I was 12 years old and we were at a Mass with one of the older, 'old school' priests giving the homily. I remember he singled out this woman from the congregation that had a tattoo on her arm and he just went off on her on and tattoos in general in front of everyone for 20 minutes. Saying how she had desecrated her body, ruined what god gave her, how youth today is misguided and doomed for hellfire, etc. etc. It was terrible. I get that he doesn't represent everyone but still, that moment for me was when the questioning really started.

Your words and prayers, they burn! :bananadead:

Seriously, if I die in a few minutes and it turns out I was wrong to disbelieve...if god decides to send me to the fires of hell despite the fact that I was a good person (so I think), then so be it. He sounds like a dick anyway.

So what happens to a child in some 3rd world country who has never heard of God and dies of starvation? Do they go to heaven? And why did that child die to begin with?

Or what about an adult living in the middle of Sudan, or some other shit hole, who has spent their entire life without ever hearing of the Christian God? Are they destined for hell? If so, why? It's not their fault they have never heard of God.

Why does God fix my neighbor's transmission but allow some child to be raped by some sick ass?

Is it the "God works in mysterious ways" thing? Or "That's God's will"? That's just not enough for me anymore.

I used to have dozens of questions every day that I struggled with. But I've come to peace with it all.

This is one of the best responses to why people turn against God. George Carlin also had a kick ass belief on religion as well.

Exactly. I'm not going to worship a god that makes me fear him and lets his flock die in horrible ways.

I love the Pascal's Wager play by the believers. However, they aren't considering a fatal flaw in their argument:

    1. The main problem with Pascal's wager is that it suffers from the fallacy of bifurcation. It only calculates with two options when there are, in fact, at least four alternatives: The christian God and afterlife, some other god and afterlife, atheism with afterlife, and atheism without afterlife. Therefore Pascal's wager is invalid as an argument.

So after my post I want to clarify a couple of things. I guess because of my Christian upbringing it's tough for me to say I'm an atheist. I think of myself as more of an agonist. But I probably waver between the 2 depending on what day it is. My Christian friends think of me as nothing but an atheist because I ask too many questions.

I have nothing but respect for other people's beliefs...even if I don't agree with whatever their doctrine is. I have much more respect for my Christian friend's boundaries than they do mine. Rather ironic, huh? :notsure:

This just in , you can believe that there is a creator/god/higher power without having to fit yourself into one of the compartments of man made religions

Honestly I contemplated what to say for about 20 minutes! Humbly , I don't have the best answer or the best come back. Words can't describe what my heart wants to say, but that relates to the scripture above. Being once an unbeliever and then one day accepting Jesus Christ as lord and savior of my own life forever changes. The puzzle piece becomes filled , and the Words of the Bible come to life and you began a "relationship" with god and not a "religion". So yes I will pray for you and this message, but definitely not for any "fire ". My prayer is for whoever reads this that their hearts comes to know the god of love, and to be filled with ultimate peace and truth.

    God bless take care

The religious discussions I take part in become rather tricky. Christianity, as a core, is a good thing. It gives people reason (some people need reason) to have good morals, and in return, is rewarded with a perfect eternal life. However, not all of us need a reason to have a high moral standard, nor do we need an answer to everything, such as what happens after death.

My two roommates (that double as two of my closest friends), who are devoted Catholics, pray for me. Religion for them has been a positive influence in their lives, and they simply want to share that positively to me. However, moving around a lot as a kid, we would always partake in different perishes. And whether you believe in Purgatory or not (just another thing even the same denominations can't agree upon) is that if I do not believe in God, I do not accept Jesus Christ as my savior, and I do not attend mass regularly, I will perish in Hell for my sins. I have never committed murder, adultry, theft. I respect my parents and my neighbors. I find the preaching of a just and kind God the most hypocritical of all, to believe a child molester can repent his sins through confession and then be sent to Heaven, where as I, a self-considered good moral person will burn eternally because I was birthed with a logical point of view on the world. If this be the case, where I am punished to eternity in Hell, I will have no regrets not believing in an unjust higher power. And if there is a Heaven, in which I am accepted, I will be able to see the error of my ways with my own eyes and hopefully repent enough to drive a P1 across the clouds.

My girlfriend and her entire family is christian several of them catholic. There have been some interesting conversations between me and her family none of them bad, angry or heated in any way just usually awkward for me. A few months ago I went to San Diego with them and they sortof cornered me one day and asked what my beliefs were. Her mom told me I was going to hell.

The next day my girlfriend and I got tattoos. Her family was thrilled :D its great because she got her first tattoo before I got one and then I got my first when she got her second one so they can't blame me for them as much as they hate tattoos!

Good to hear y'all get along with it. The girl I dated two and a half years and I fought about it constantly, when I was starting to break away from the Catholic Church and forming my own beliefs. I had a good friend who was Buddhist and he helped me a lot. The girl I was dating, catholic, literally (in the literal sense) called my beliefs stupid, and I just couldn't see here.

I also lost the girl of my dreams because of religion. She was devoted, and spoke of everything she did was to strengthen her relationship with God. Dating an atheist wouldn't have helped her cause. We called it off before we had a fight, beforehand it was just calm discussion.

No lie I'm a millennial and had to google what that meant, but thank you kindly :hattip:

Yeah my girlfriend is religious bit she doesn't push it on me. Her family hasn't tried to convert me either, I think she told them to back off.

Sorry it didn't work out for you man.

I know you mean well, but it is arrogant to think that non-believers have less capacity for love, peace and truth in their lives. Assuming that people are in spiritual crisis because they don't share your religious beliefs is condescending. It conveys to others that you consider them somewhat inferior for not thinking the way you do. For many people like myself, there was never a spiritual crisis because we have never believed in any deity or supernatural phenomenon in the first place.

I grew up in one of the most religious counties in the entire U.S. Unlike my peers who automatically and unconsciously belonged to the religious majority, my convictions were ruthlessly tested every day. That is why posting a bible verse hoping to "flip" atheists is like taking a pink Daisy BB gun hoping to defeat ISIS.
