What phone are you using with your Tacoma?

I'm using an iphone7. Phone calls, contacts, and bluetooth streaming music all work great. With the caveat of not setting up quick contacts, incoming text messages work fine; displayed if I'm not moving, read out loud if I am. Siri hands-free also works fairly well.

The Toyota Entune app, required for the headunit's Pandora/Slacker/iHeartradio apps, pretty much sucks. It's really cool when it's working. I find I have to force-quit and restart the app about every 2nd or third time I get in the truck. I'm crossing my fingers that they release an update that fixes this problem, but not holding my breath.

My iphone6 behaved the same as above.

I personally don't consider Android phones as my family and my other devices are mostly Apple. I'm not against Android at all, it's just that the benefits of staying on the Apple platform exceed any benefits I've yet seen for switching.

I've not done anything with the phone connected by USB since I'm using a Qi wireless charging patch with my iphone7. It works with the truck's Qi charger, but I also cobbled together a franken-mount consisting of a Scoshe magic mount pro mated to a vent-mount Nilken magnetic QI charger. I'm loving just placing my phone on the mount and it charges. Still a work in progress, I'll post up details in a few weeks when I try a couple other things I want to try.

 

I hear that the Galaxy Note 7's are ON FIRE!

I have a s6 active and it works great with the truck. Especially since it has built in wireless charging and all i do is set it on the QI charging station and BAM...cant get that with an Iphone. Never been an apple person...always like bananas though!

Yea gotta buy the QI charging case though right? Not that its huge deal, just nice to have it already built into the phone. Love it when my friends with an Iphone get in the car and say, can i charge my phone...no you cant because i have wireless charging and dont need your "lightning cord". Though the iphone can take live photos.....COOOOOOOLLLLLL

 

I've got the iPhone 6s and have had no issues with it at all. The entune app connects every time I get in it and I haven't had a single issue since I changed the screen layout to two things (radio and map) - for some reason issues happened all the time when I had the 3 panel layout of map/phone/music.

With that said, I bought one of the I cases and ditched it. My phone charges 2 to 3 times as fast when hooked up to the lightning cable coming from a USB adapter in my console than it did with the qi station. The USB supplied connection in the dash area charges slowly also.

 

Yeah, you need a case or a "patch". Some Qi capable battery cases present a microUSB port externally, allowing for wired charging if you need to, but they can add a lot of bulk. Otherwise you block the lightning port with the patch or case connector, meaning you need to disconnect if you need to use the lightning port.

I have a thin shell case over a patch. Blocking the lightning port hasn't been an issue for me. Any itunes syncing with my computer occurs over wifi. I use no lighting based accesories. I never use wired headphones, and the only times I was plugging in was to charge the phone. Even then I only did so at a small number of fixed locations.

So I put a $12 charging pad at each location. Since I was already just setting my phone down at those spots, I now just set them on a charge pad.

I agree, it'd be a lot nicer to have it built into the phone. Cases and patches are kludges. I was hoping Apple would get their act together on that for the iphone 7 but they didn't, so I worked around it. While not perfect, I do really enjoy not having to plug in.

 

Just picked up a Galaxy S7 Edge to replace the Note I had on order, and it works perfectly with the truck. Especially with the charging pad.

 

It seems there's a lot of variance in how well different Qi solutions for iphones work. What I have seems to charge pretty fast on the truck's pad, but certainly others may have different results. My biggest problem with it is that I can't see the phone for Waze when it's down in the cubby. It also seemed rather finicky about positioning.

You're entirely correct that wireless isn't going to charge as fast as a direct 2.4A wired connection. I think that's true on the Android phones with inbuilt Qi as well. Inherent inefficiencies.

That said, it hasn't been an issue for me as I'm seldom pulling the battery down enough to be an issue, and don't typically need fast recharge when I do. I find that having a charging pad sitting at the spots I usually set my phone down at anyway tends to keep the battery topped up far more so than when I had to remember to plug it in to charge it. Others situations will vary of course.

The dash USB port is low amperage. 1A max I think based on what I've seen charging stuff from it. Maybe less. It's slow as snot. It didn't have enough juice to drive my wireless charger used with my magnetic mount, I had to use a separate charger in the 12V port. (Aukey 2-port 4.8A)

 

Android Turbo, yes it works great in my truck and for everything that I need it to do, it has the biggest and longest lasting internal battery of just about every phone on the market, one of the best cameras, the specs blow away just about all of the icrap on the market.

You couldn't give me an icrap phone, their specs suck compared to so many other phones, if people did their homework and compared other phones to icrap phones, icrap would go out of business. icrap makes you pay for this, pay for that, if you have their phone they got you by the balls.

For those that want to dispute this I`m not going to do the homework for you and show all of the comparisons, there is plenty of info on the internet so do your own homework to see that they are crap, I won`t argue with you about it, if you are too lazy to look it up and make the comparisons with other phones and if the icrap is what makes you happy keep your icrap, no big deal.

 

Sigh. Another one of those who can't conceive that different things are important to different people.

Get a GOOGLE PIXEL. They're available for preorder NOW, start shipping on Oct 20th. These are the best phones money can buy, with the best processor (snapdragon 821). I recommend avoiding apple or samsung like the plagues they are. Apple because they like to limit what you can do with it, and samsung because they are such poor quality (remember that quality is on the INSIDE, not on the outside -- until they explode, then its on both sides) and they do a terrible butchering job to the Android UI.

 

The problem you had with that "S7 edge" isn't an android problem, nor is it necessary to go over ANY settings to keep a GOOD android phone from those bad behaviors that you mention. Those problems are very SAMSUNG specific.

I use Android phones. I've owned ONE samsung, and I will *NEVER* buy another samsung. EVER.

If you want a predictable and reliable experience with Android, try to stick with the devices that are supported by Google. First it was the Android developer phones, then Nexus, this year they're calling them PIXEL.

I started off with an Android Developer Phone 1, great experience, if somewhat primitive, after all, it was 2008. Followed that with an HTC Dream, good, but didn't compare, then a Samsung Relay (S3 with a keyboard) -- TERRIBLE in every way imaginable. Currently Nexus 6 (unbelievably good!).

 

Please don't blame android for samdung's shortcomings.

 

I had 0 problems with my HTC, thats why I wanted to give Android another shot and the S7 Edge was all the hype. Maybe on my next upgrade ill give it another go around.

 

While not branded by HTC, the Google Pixel's are manufactured by them.
