I know you guys love your bad ass aftermarket skid plates, and hell yeah they are totally awesome. But since I don't do any real off roading like muddin or rock crawlin, the TRD plate seems to work just fine for me. Dealer slapped one on my new 2017 DC SR5 for free. What puzzles me though is that they removed the splash guard this time. They gave it back to me as a spare part. I guess the new TRD plate won't fit over the splash guard on Gen 3 tacos like the previous OEM plate did on my Gen 2 DC TRD Sport (since the new plate is thicker?).

    :notsure:

Painted mine matte black! It stood out to much at the factory color!

Not off roading is the best use of aluminum skid plates

I think it depends on your use and needs. If you are going to be sliding over rocks with a large percentage of the weight of your truck on the point of a rock poking into your skid and you intend to do that frequently, they absolutely get steel.

If you figure you will only occasionally have a large amount of weight on your skid or it's only there if you screw up and hit the occasional miss-judged rock, then I think aluminum is fine and has the advantage of lower weight.

Based on my usage so far and my previous vehicles, I think aluminum would be fine for me but I'd still have to weigh the weight savings against the cost.

Heh..Heh.....maybe its really not the aluminum skid plate. Sometimes its what's between the driver's seat and the steering wheel.

    Question:
Is the circular hole towards the rear of the skid plate for removing the oil pan drain plug?

Can't remember off hand if the plug is that far back from the filter... I assume there is somewhere for access to the drain plug, as having a filter access hatch is pointless, if you still have to remove skid plate to get to the drain plug.

Are there any know problems with the dealer installing a TRD Skid Plate on my new 2017 TRD Sport? I realize they would have to remove the air dam and small existing plate. Just wondering as I seem to be getting some pushback that they don't like to modify the vehicle. Meeting with them on Monday but I just don't see what the problem might be and the Skid Plate was part of the agreed deal.

The oil pan, if you call it that because it's so small, is way back there

You can install it yourself. It's not hard to do.

    Which recovery point is that?
Now that I know the BPF one will not work my skid, I need an alternative.
    Thanks in advance.

I used a half inch galvanized D ring shackle from Tractor Supply. Spray painted it red. I also used rubber hose washers on the pin to stabilize it to keep from flopping around.hth

So this is probably a dumb question, but shouldn't a skid plate, something intended to provide protection under extreme abuse, be made of heavy gauge steel rather than aluminum? Has aluminum really gotten that much stronger through new manufacturing processes???

If I routinely dragged my taco over rocks then steel would make sense, but for the occasional hit my truck might take aluminum is the way to go....at least for me anyways.
