    That's what I always heard.

Then Feb 1 rolled around and I did the taxes. HOLY SHIT DID WE GET SCREWED.

Well, not really. We owed what we owed. I've never owed on taxes before, so a $3600 bill was a big shock.

We were claiming 0. What we ended having to do was have additional witholdings. Only took 3yrs to figure it out, but we finally got a refund last year.

    ^^ This ^^

I adjust mine so I either pay a little or receive a small refund (+/- $500).

This year (2015 tax year) I received $120 in refund from Feds and paid $27 to the state of Maine.. perfect!

I know getting a large refund is nice and many people count on them for that infusion of $$, but I don't want the government keeping my hard earned $$ all year.

You must be bringing some serious coin if that's true. If you don't need cash on hand contribute to a 401k or and ira. Don't pay the gov't. Every year I use a tax estimator and place additional funds to my 401k so I can stay in the 15% tax bracket. I also have an hsa account that is tax free. We have a pretty good budget setup and both of use are kinda cheap.

We're both 0 and have an additional $80/mo withheld. Last year we finally got a refund. I considered dropping down to $40/mo, but I like that fatty refund.

Not at all. We weren't bringing in shit. Well, she was making decent money, in my opinion...still, a fifth of what her boss makes. I was, and still am, making less than I did as a mechanic at a bike shop.

I can tell you not being able to claim one of the boys was kick to the nuts.
