I have a feeling that mine will also need to be replaced. There are plenty of options on this site for aftermarket skids. I will probably be choosing one from here made of aluminum to avoid any other issues with rust in the future

at the risk of conviction for hijacking :
I have a 1998 4x4 Xcab with 180,000 miles from California , I climbed all under and found ZERO rust on the frame OR body, I cant seem to find any. even the bolts are pretty good . I asked at a dealer and they said its not under the frame recall. California uses pumice for ice control in the mountains, not aware of any de-icing salts used
Just wondering : was this a quality control issue during certain years where the frames did not get galvanized ?
Should I do anything to prevent rust now that I moved to a state that uses Calcium Chloride ?
or would it be like polishing a turd since it is already in its senior years anyway ....LOL might push another 100,000 since I put in a 2001 lower mile crash motor

    2003 Tacoma 4x4 V6 SR5 currently getting a new frame
    Here with another positive update.

Got my truck back from the shop about two weeks ago. I waited a bit to post on here in order to sus out any potential issues. Its safe to say my frame replacement went well and that my vehicle is in tip top shape! As a first time 4x4 owner I can only say that it has been a blast owning this thing. Going many places my old subaru never could've dreamed of reaching. I've also put her to the test on pavement these past few weeks, logging 2k+ miles driving mainly around the west coast and rocky mountains. After replacing a radiator hose that had a slight leak with an OEM one off Amazon I experienced no other issues throughout the trip. Hot deserts, steep mountain grades, cities were all a breeze.

Cheers to Toyota for the frame and reliable rig!

Also, obligatory pics for those who want to see the end result

So I am about to embark in trying to get a new frame as well. Do any of you know if they judge the overall condition of the truck? Within reason obviously. Ive got wheel well rust and im concerned that it might deter them. Has anyone been bought out?

I have heard that Toyota will pay for your vehicle rather than do the work as it may be cheaper for them. They would then scrap the truck.

The buyback was for 1998 to 2000 Tacomas. The frame replacement is for 2001 to 2004. But I believe the buyback for the 98-00s is over. And the replacement program fro 01-04s is only still valid 15 years from your model year (or build year, but I believe it's model year) and only if the vehicle was brought in for an inspection during the program before 2012.

Thanks for the info. I know I'm in the wrong place, I have a 2000 tundra. Not sure if the same warranty applies. The dealership said it does, something about a cross member, which could lead to frame replacement. I'm in the wrong, didn't notice how bad it was until after the purchase. Now I won't drive it.....fingers crossed I didn't just lose $. Inspection Is in a week.

All I can say is best of luck. I don't know about any warranties/safety campaigns Toyota has run/is running for Tundras.
