Oldman u just don't use the gas pedal and are probably in everyone's way on the road! Some of us expect performance out of a new vehicle.

New owner. Yes it's a little slugguish at times, but nearly 20 mpg pulling a trailer with a 500 lb KTM 990 for 500 miles at 65mph isn't too bad. When I want to feel the power (and it has plenty) turning on the ECT mode does the trick. It's a f'in truck - drive it like one and quit bitching about gas mileage. If you don't like the sluggish shifts, use ECT or push the shift lever to the left.

    .

    Trucks are work vehicles.

Tacomas are work vehicles that are also good (from what I have read) off road vehicles.

Why did you buy the Tacoma? To drag race?

No thats what this is for. I have owned many vehicles including Toyotas and comparably to how driving it feels to other years of Tacomas which my friends own, the 2016 is sluggish and shifts poorly compared to other yeras with a V-6. This isnt a blind review, its in comparison to other year Tacomas and other trucks. This isnt my first BBQ!camaro january 05 006.jpg camaro january 05 003.jpg

    Right- nice ride.

If you don't mind me asking, why do you need a pickup truck?

To pull my wood fired oven, i own a catering company and was tired of filling up my 2013 Chevy Express Extended van.My full size Chevy truck only gets 6 mpg so something somewhat economical made sense and i have always loved Tacomas but i never wanted to pay so much for a compact truck.I just figured it would be a bit more sporty than it is. The van was pretty peppy for such a beast. It was a toss up between Chevy Colorado diesel or a Tacoma. Tacomas have such good reliability ratings, thats why i bought one.

Similar expectations, different outcome-no problems with my slightly less equipped vehicle.
Hoping Toyota makes right by you.
Also, for what it's worth, I drive conservatively most of the time too. Not in the fast lane and not because I'm on a cell phone texting or whatever.....

So let me ask OP. What's not "peppy" about the truck? Mine does just fine and I average over 20mpg. 16-18mpg in the city depending on how short my trips are. The truck makes plenty of power, mine shifts just fine and nothing sluggish about it. And as for you wanting the Chevy diesel, good luck with pep on that one. A 4 cylinder diesel can only do so much and probably benefit you, especially not being off road capable for almost 45k. If you come from performance oriented machines then yes this truck will not feel right to you. It wasn't meant for drag racing but more for off-road and some light towing. Goff luck if you get that Chevy. They have all sorts of problems

And I also have to ask, are you talking about your tank mpg average? I changed mine to active average mpg and reset it every time I go somewhere to see how it does. 7650 miles and it keeps getting better.

My tank average is 17mpg. It just crazy to think i had a full size chevy Z71 four door with a V8 and tons of towing capabilities that got equal MPG. Its hard to lose two cylinders and not gain any MPG.But its waaaay waaaay more comfortable in my Tacoma for sure!

As for not using the gas pedal and in someones way, if I'm on the highway and see a tail light I gotta pass it. I traded a 01,F-250 super duty with a v10 and lifted, as far as gas mileage I didn't see double digits until 10,000 miles and it had more power than this Tacoma. I didn't buy this truck for the mpg or power even though I would prefer power over the mpg but that is just me I'm retired and don't have to care about mpg. My 2 cent comment was referring to all these posts complaining about how bad this truck is. It is one thing to find out about problems but to keep on bashing the truck when all is said and done, it is still a pretty good truck!

Yea that V10 is a beast but can do anything you need it to and then some Im sure. I'm going to put a shell on her and call it good until the warranty runs out. Either way, if i choose to keep, it still has the best resale value out of any other truck out there. Im loving the ride, its smooth and tight on the curves, it just lacks umph even with ect on.

You didn't see double digit gas mileage until 10k miles? You were getting less than 10mpg???

See here is exactly your problem with the power output with the truck. You've compared a 3.5L V6 to a couple V8 & V10. Which as we all know have far more torque than even the biggest 6 cylinder engines unless a diesel. A little computer programming will go a long way with this motor. Which I'm working on with a master tech and someone who writes code. And I would suggest you chance your driver info to average mpg which is active every time you get in the truck. Or do the math and see that the mpg is not as bad you think it is. All depends on distance of drive. Short ones over and over and you get shit mpg. Longer equals better. You figure it out

Im not comparing to a V10. Obviously a six cylinder wont match up to the hp or torque,im a car nut. I have built 2 hot rods, jet boats, im well informed on hp and torque. I have had more toys and have full knowledge on comparing apples to oranges. My point was i can get better mpg with a V8 and tow more. That does not make sense in my brain. If you drop HP and torque it usually always mean you will get better mpg. The Tacoma wont get better milage than a new Chevy with a V8. People should know this before giving up a full size truck in hopes of achieving better mpg. I truely thought i would squeeze a better average out of my Tacoma but my old truck has it beat. I still love driving the mini Tacoma, they just need to improve mpg. If you mess with the computer it voids the waranty. You cant use an aftermarket programmer or you can kiss your warranty goodbye! I'm sorry but I don't know anyone who wants to buy a new truck and have to go to a technician and have a new set of computer codes made and written for the truck. Thats crazy talk! You obviously find it lacking also or you wouldn't go through the trouble of recoding the computer.

I never got over 15 mpg even after the 10,000 break-in miles. Right after buying the truck I put a chip/tuner in it CAI and dual exhaust with all that done I could and did burn a set of Pro Comp MT 35" tires off it. It was a great truck, it was more then I needed after retiring.

The service department told me if i used a aftermarket tuner it would void the warranty. How would they know if i reset the computer back to stock before bringing it in?I want to be able to melt 35" tires too!!!

No it's actually plenty enough for me. I'm just trying smooth out the power band and torque curve. Plus the amount of people in the market for such a thing is huge. Plus it can't void warranty if they can't see it. It's done with plenty of German cars and no issues..It can be done with this truck the same way. Call it a bit more refinement in tuning. And in case you forget the Chevy will cut out half the cylinders to obtain such gas mileage. Most 5.3L V8 maintain less than 15mpg. I know a few people that have them.
