I choose to do my own and it costs less than $50 and about 2 hours of my time. I use full synthetic Mobil1 and high quality filters only. Takes about 1 hour to change the oil and 1 hour to take the used oil to Wal-Mart for disposal. I like to know it's done right and as long as I'm able, I'll do it myself. I worked at a dealership 25 years ago and I do not trust them to do anything right. I hear circus music and see clowns when I pull into the service dept.

    Exactly.

Negotiating is not about what something is worth, it's about what you can leverage. In this case you have a lot of leverage

This isn't a terrible resolution. Keep your head up, OP! You have a working truck at the moment, correct? No bad noises, no grinding sounds, no driveability problems? Unbalanced wheels aside, there is nothing else mechanically wrong. Look at it this way, you got all you could done on a Saturday. If it hasn't grenaded yet, it probably won't this weekend.

I think you are on the right track to go back on Monday. Call first, and see if you can set up a time to speak to the service mgr. Don't bother with 'service advisors,' they aren't decision makers. Be polite but firm, you need to speak with the service mgr. If you want to do it on the phone, fine, but I would ask if you can come in person.

Remember, you haven't been harmed yet. They are 'guilty' of shoddy workmanship, and they know that, but that doesn't entitle you to squat yet (Unfortunately). The dealership cannot fix something that isn't broken. Nor are they going to promise you anything other than the examination they just did, and a future one, which is good. You are not going to get a replacement engine until (and unless) this one fails.

Explain what happened to the service mgr - be polite, don't call his techs morons, this is the time to be diplomatic. Make sure he knows the engine stopped, but restarted and ran OK.

Then lay out your expectations. Again, be polite and reasonable - you want what you paid for - You expect a full service life out of this truck, and you are worried this has shortened the engine life, and that the engine may fail far earlier now. Furthermore, you are worried this will have voided the manufacturer warranty and the extended warranty you paid for, as Toyota corporate will claim negligence. See how he responds to that. If he says it has not voided any warranties, then I would politely ask him to verify that, and imply that you will. Ask if he understands your position. Take notes. No matter what he says, be calm - now is not the time to raise hell, as that won't help your case; especially if you later need to get a lawyer involved.

I wouldn't call Toyota until you talk to the service mgr - if you call Toyota, they will probably tell you to work it out with the dealer; again, because you have a working truck. Toyota will be reactive, not proactive. You have to have something wrong for corporate to take action.

Good luck, drive the truck as much as you can to see if something will act up. Hopefully you are in good shape.

Make a case file with Toyota ASAP you'll get much much much farther the second they didn't want to replace your engine you should have called Toyota why don't you make a case file and figure this out they get paid to listen to bull shit but this isn't bull shit this is a big problem

New motor is not $20K. They are a Toyota dealer. I believe they can get one at a discount.

Just so you are aware, all that a borescope does is look down in the cylinders. It will not tell you anything about the pistons, piston rings, rod journals, rod bearings, crankshaft journals, crankshaft bearings, nor anything about the camshafts and cam journals in the heads. You took the right approach in that you mentioned that it stalled or effectively seized. Frankly, i am skeptical that they pulled the spark plugs on every cylinder and looked in the cylinder bores. The reason I am calling bullshit is that it would have taken them an extra minute to do a compression test while they had already pulled the spark plug. In addition, a borescope if just a camera....and you are looking for scoring of cylinder walls. It in no way is measuring the bore to ensure no damage or out of round, it also isnt a foolproof way to look at all the cylinder walls for scoring and requires you to pull piston down to its lowest travel in the bore to see the entire cylinder wall

What dealer is this? I assume one in the Denver Metro area. Don't back down. I gave you several negotiation fall back positions and i'm not even convinced you need to fallback yet. None of my fallback positions are just let it go. They messed up, they have to prove that it didn't damage the motor. Just pulling the filter will not show damage. The only time you will find metal particles and shavings in the filter is after things start to come apart. No doubt that there was still some oil in the engine (prob 1/2 quart), but that isn't enough to protect things. I suspect your oil sump was picking up more air than oil.

Keep pushing. and keep your head up. Any mechanic worth their salt knows that it is likely damaged and has shortened the lifespan of the motor.

p.s. just looked up a short block for a 2015 4.0L....online discount prices are like $3K. Pretty sure a long block (short block plus cylinder heads and camshafts) aint gonna run $20K. This just gives you an idea they are bullshitting you.

p.p.s just looked up a replacement engine for 2015 4.0L. Part number 190000P290. List price $18,703.82. Online discounted price from Olathe Toyota is $14,544.19. The 4.0L with the tow package is part #190000P120. List price is $17,542.97 and online discounted price from Olathe Toyota is $13,641.51. And that is the price they charge us suckers. Again...certain they can purchase for lower cost than we can purchase. So again, more bullshit....and I proved it for you. Ask the dealer what is their next lie in order to weasel out of their responsibility.

Exactly/ Honestly there is no way to fully asses possible damage without disassembly. The only way to check cam and crank bearings is to pull the cam and crank and look at the damn bearings. They are trying to blow you off.

Exactly, they are just trying to convince you to just let it go. Don't be a sucker. Make sure you get everything you need to put yourself at ease so you can sleep at night and not worry about whether your truck will run or not

Meh. It's his vehicle if he doesn't want to fight it, it's on him. I personally wouldn't want to be driving a time bomb vehicle that has a high chance of shitting the bed in the future.

I love you guys! I can't express my appreciation without doing something that would probably cause my wife to divorce me. So I am totally with you thinking the same thing. SilvFx, the dealer is so close to you that I will seriously buy a cup of coffee or a beer. So when someone tells me that the engine will cost $19 grand, I am totally calling bullshit. I am getting fired up and will get some results on Monday or you will see some shenanigans on Tuesday news.

Wow. Just wow. Dealer messes up big time then says, "There is no damage, trust us, we checked!" Of course they are going to say there is no damage! They are on the hook big time if there is.

Push for the lifetime power train, that is the least they could do. Honestly you would have been better off running it till it seized.

People and businesses make mistakes, it is all about how they handle the mistakes that makes them good or not. Dealerships need to learn their tricks don't work like they used to thanks to the Internet.

You shouldn't have left that day with your truck. Typical noob mistake. Your engine is shit and the dealer is probably too small to be able to make the situation correct. On the other hand if you are incapable of seeing this situation for what it really is than you had/have it coming.
I used to work at a couple toyota stealerships as a tech before I got a real career, I saw everything. Kinda blows me away that we drive these metal horses everyday but don't know how they work or how to maintain them ourselves.
