Mine was built in Mexico. So far, so good.

Mine is from Mexico. I did notice a few times when cold a hesitation going into drive. I'll probably take it to work and do the TSB flash. I'll probably check the fluid level just to be sure only because of the few reported issues. I don't consider that a big deal at all. I'm happy with the truck. Just wish I've been able to drive it more and do some more mods

One reason I don't know about the rear end howl is that my dad's 2011 Tundra with 40k makes the same howl at about the same speed. Maybe it is normal, or maybe it's an on going issue across the board? I just know the tundra is running strong and haul a big boat regularly with it

After all the posts I read about people getting them replaced up to 3 times and having the same light whine at a certain speed I believe it is nothing at all really. Most people wouldn't know it was there until reading in here and then running out to the truck to see if they have the same tacoma ward problem.

The whine being discussed, is it a high frequency/pitch type sound?
I've noticed this sound approaching near the 55-60 MPH mark. It lasts only a few seconds and stops when a different speed (higher/lower) is reached. I think this also occurs at 40-45 MPH.

My Tacoma has now just over 300 miles on the odo, but I noticed it starting around 100 miles+

Does anyone think this will turn into a bigger issue?

That's the whine. I'm just going to let it go. If I start seeing diffs blow up here, I'll get it addressed.

There was a TSB for rear end 'whine' on the gen 2's (2008).. I had it from the get go, noticed it about a week into ownership.. They replaced the rear end with 200 miles on the truck. That was 9 years and 152k miles ago.. never had another rear end issue or whine.

Wonderful... Well at least now I know the sound is coming from the diff not tranny and it's not unique to just my truck.

I'm a first time Tacoma owner; guessing this whine wasn't an issue on previous gens. Hope this is not Toyota cost cutting.

    Thanks for the reply!

I've just got a squeak between the leather passenger seat and the center console. They rub together when nobody is sitting there. I shoved an envelope between there now and now it's silent. Going to maybe go to Michael's and get some stick-um black felt or fabric or something and stick it on the console betwixt the two.

Try some armorall or similar to reduce friction.

I'm going to have to go to a hobby shop seems like a much better option than the 3m friction tape I've been using.

Traded in the last one, going to start modifying this soon.
I used to drive a lifted KJ with whomping mud tires (yes, yes, poor alignment, etc.) so my bar for whistling noises is quite high

This one is probably real. I have it on my OR and there is a consensus (it seems) that this is due to the hydroboost pump. It looks like the brake handling on the OR model is a little different and there is a definite non-linear feel to it.

But you know what, I take the soft pulsing as a reassurance that the truck is coddling me in its braking goodness :) It's tell me that it cares and it will try, very hard, to come to a stop just like I asked it. Should the pulsing stop one day I might actually freak out!

Not a horrible outcome. going in tomorrow for a sticky temp knob and small defect in the handle and will mention the diff howl, at least just to get it noted if nothing else. with toyotas lawsuit, they are losing a lot of money and need to get back to focusing on quality rather than just assuming they are forever gold.

In for 5K service now. Additionally, they are:
    • Replacing both rear brake drums due to factory over-tightening of parking brake which caused warping, felt like vibration when stopping
    • Performing 2 TSBs (no big deal)
    • Working on rattling in right A-Pillar (they still haven't figured this out)
    • Checking transmission fluid level. Stated it was not low...
Been in the shop for 7 days now, with no estimation of completion time (waiting on parts)

Ya that sucks, stupid annoying issues that should have never been a problem. but at least you haven't broke down and no real reliability issue. getting parts in a timely manor is terrible with the 3rd gens right now. took them two weeks to get my lower control arm plugs, and my transmission detent pin took 3 weeks

If that 97 F250 has a 7.3 powerstroke, it may be the best truck ever made. If it has the 6.0, it might be the worst.

Well let's just say it is safe to say the 2016's are definitely having more issues than years passed mine included.Ive experienced all the small issues but did have my drive shaft center bearing and u joint replaced after I reported seeing a leak.IMG_0155.jpg

Sure if you want to only go back enough to make it look like that
