30 mpg

I got 30 MPG with my 4x4!!!!


HAHA HA...well, not really but i've seen so many damn threads lateley about people claiming 425 miles per tank and 23 MPG....man it's jo soooo hard to believe.....

i can't get over 18 MPG in the summer driving easy (2009 AC MT 6speed)

i have noticed that all these guys who claim 450 a tank or 22 MPG seem to be driving 4 door Auto's..

 

I drove out to delaware to sell my steps last weekend and I filled up before I left and when I filled up again I put 16 gallons in my tank and my trip meter said 330 miles. So I averaged about 20.6 MPG! It was all highway though. In stop and go driving I get scared to check my mpg. It's usually around the 16 range.

 

I dont see how they could that good of MPG. I only had my truck a month before I lifted it so IDK what i was getting before, but I think the best ive gotten so far is around 18 or so. maybe 330 miles out of a tank max. The tank im on now is only gonna get about 260 miles...

 

My stock V6 Prerunner is gettin 440 miles a tank

 

but that's hypothetic math, no real life math....

 

I don't like letting my tank get down so low. I usually fill up at 1/8 to 1/4 of a tank. I see what my trip meter reads and divide by how much gas I put in the tank. Then I reset the meter to see what the next tank gets me.
My mileage is worse with winter gas. I bought it in late August so I don't have a good comparison to summer gas yet.

 

Thats good mileage. Do you do mostly highway driving?
I have about a 60/40 hwy/city. That tank where I was averaging 20.6mpg was about 95% hwy.

 

30 mpg is doable , but you have to work towards it , we cant have it because we want it.
Its best tried in a 2wd 4 cyl. but use what you want to try. I thought i got 30mpg for a while but it's actually 28mpg.... heres what i did, inflate (stock at20s) tires to 36-40 ,the ride is harsher, but youll pick up around 1 mpg.
You cant go as fast as you want, I went 60... 65 lost me 1.5 mpg.
Ditch all the add on weight, that roof rack will slow you down.
Synthetics.... your call, i feel i only gained .5 mpg
cruise control.... i drive steady, it drives steadier.
air intake mods .... feell pulling the 2ndary gained me .5 but feel the afe lost me 1 mpg... hard to measure
measure accurately at the same pump at fill ups
use a gps to check your speedo.... which is why i thought i got close to 30 but converted to 28.3 mpg

i didnt think I could beat my stock claimed 22 on the sticker, but i did. Its winter and have winter tires , im getting 22 now at 65mph, what matters isnt what mpg you get.... its that you tried , and hopefully learned from it.

somewhere between phoenix to LA, i got one tank @ 22mpg. the rest were 20 point something. slow and steady was the key. i put my truck just below 70mph, which had the rpms about 2k. hit the cruise button and let it go. so it was 100% hwy.. i was following a friend towing a trailer, so we couldnt haul ass anyways.

my mixed mileage is 18.
i take my measurements the regular way..fill up, zero trip odo, fill up again, do the math on my phone.

But now w/ E10 gas everywhere in the Northeast dont think I'll ever see that again.

 

Its easy. Find some REAL gasoline instead of E10. Top off your tank about a dozen times till the fuel is sitting right at the fuel cap and doesn't go down anymore.

Get on a rural highway with no traffic lights but no speeds over 60mph and drive. Once the low fuel light comes on, start searching on the GPS for a gas station about 40 miles further down your route. You'll have ~1 gallon left in your tank and I'm pretty sure not all of that is usable. If you fill it all the way to the gas cap again you'll probably put ~21.5 gallons in the tank.

You will be able to claim you get 475 miles per tank (22mpg * 21.5 gallons). If you use Canadian gallons (an Imperial gallons is 1.2 US gallons) you can also claim you get 26.4mpg.


Granted that's not realistic for most people in suburbia who deal with traffic, interstate speeds, and ethanol. But 360 miles (19.5mpg * 18.5 gallons) is often doable for my day to day driving.

 

So I know you don't fill up often on the bike- but where does the gas go??

 

All you need is a drive with an elevation drop of about 7000 feet, like say going from south lake tahoe to the sf bay. I've already got 2 trips this snowboarding season with really good MPG, one was 21.1 and the latest at 22.1. The 21.1 was done in 4Hi for about 50 miles, conditions were bad from south lake tahoe to almost placerville that week.

I'm wondering if Nevada gas has less ethanol than Cali or the better mpg's is mainly due just because I'm mostly going downhill?

 

I can get 25 out of my 4cyl, 5-lug, auto, on the highway if I drive like a granny.

when you are on h4, you don't go over 60mph right?
does the transmission automatically limit your speed to 60mph going downhill while on h4?

 

Keep in mind stock trucks have those smaller tires on them so the speedo is clocking them at a higher mph than actually traveling. I think it is a 4% error with 265/70/16, and could be even higher with the 245s on the SR5.

I still don't believe a legit 440 miles is possible with a prerunner. Even when it was stock the best I got was 360 with a 20 gallon fill up

 

09 dbl cab 2.5" lift stock tires 2 wheel drive.
TRD intake Banks exhaust.
21MPG this morning using the odo miles traveled and gallons to fill up.
Combined highway and city with the crappy winter 91 octane gas.
I have pulled 23 with more highway miles than city.
I am sure larger wider heavier tires will drop it a large amount.

 

do you let your fuel gauge needle go as far as it could go before filling up? I usually get to fill about 17 gallons only when the empty light comes on, and thats usually around 300 miles for me which comes to approximately 17.5 mpg on 4x4 DC.

 

I can go over 60, no limiter on 4Hi. You just can't shift from 2Hi to 4Hi going above 60 mph.
