This post doesn't even make sense.... why not buy the materials a day or so before? Why are you doing a tire rotation ? Everything you're saying in this post is about I don't want to do this or that , if that's the case yes stick to the dealer changing your oil cause you'd rather waste time driving there, waiting, and getting charged more money.

How could they drain oil if they forgot to put it in the engine to begin with?

They probably filled it up. Ran it for a bit, drained it to check for shaving or deposits from any damage that could have occured

The filter is a bypass filter. The entire load of oil needs to be filtered while draining the pan.

Just autopsy of the filter is not going to give you the entire picture. Don't let them drain into a dirty oil drain pan.

Once I realized there was no oil in the engine, I probably would have said fuck it and just drove it until it died. They'd pretty much have to give you a new engine then.

I can understand not doing that. We love our trucks and are not going to intentionally blow the engine even if its for a purpose.

WOW that amazing that you drove it that fare. We had a LX570 that a tech forgot to put oil in. It was runing for about 5 mins in his bay and the motor blew up.

That's an interesting thought. You have a receipt in hand that shows an oil change done by them that same day, a bone dry dip stick and frozen motor.

That explains why my GX engine is so smooth and quite and my Tacomas engine sounds like a Diesel engine.
Rough engines = more durable :amen:

Now THAT cost the dealership a pretty penny, even at THEIR cost.

Good point ! If push comes to shove the dealer may say he should have not restarted and drove back . I hate to say it and I really feel for the OP. but it depends if he told them what happened . He would have been best off saying it made a noise and he came right back and did not see any light.
OP - without being unreasonable , insist for more than a warranty . I would get them to take it in trade for full value and get a new one. They should not take money off of the value for something they pretend is not a problem . This way you will never have any guilt for selling it to someone while knowing it is a problem .

Are you saying that if a minimum wage earner did it the owner should take the hit ? He would be fired anyway because it happened . How about the minimum wage earner that cross threads your oil pan plug . It could take days for the oil to get low enough to cause a problem and then they deny it all because you should have seen oil dripping . It happened and the dealer should take the hit.

The technician will not get fired if it's his first mistake.

I correct my post now after thinking more about it.
NOT that the OP did because I read most of this and believe he was wronged ! But how many times does someone screw up their own home oil change and forget to put in the oil . Drive it for a bit and say oh Crap !!! . then go to the dealer and have it done , then leave , drain it out and drive it until it seizes and blame it on the dealer ? I bet it has been done before . The dealer has to be sure as to what happened also .

My brother worked at the local Subaru dealership for a while taking pictures for internet listings. In '15, this exact thing happened. The dealership decided to give the guy full trade in value, regardless of the blown motor. He ended up getting into a brand new vehicle for the $5K or so difference in price. And yes, the tech got fired on the spot. First mistake or not, the guy was an obvious liability for them and they had to correct it.
